I have been an artist and art educator for over 20 years. My work has focused on a number of different themes through the years but has always used the play of imagination and the flow of the consciousness and unconscious mind as a starting point. The Idea of Random Post comes from this play within the imagination and how what appears totally random is not. Another important influence in my mail art is that I am a collector of many things from old scraps of paper to stamps and first day covers (FDC). An FDC is a stamp that has been cancelled on an envelope with a postmark dated on the first day of issue for the stamp. Since the 1920’s, collector’s started putting images on the envelopes that related to the stamp. I started creating FDC’s 10 years ago and make them for my self and to sell. You can checkout a number of these on flicker (Greg Carter First Day Covers).  I have always liked to challenge expectations and rules so I have made a lot of FDC that don’t really follow the norms of stamp collectors. Because I am a trained printmaker, I have made a number these FDC’s and various mail art with different printing processes.

It might seem random, but it is not, there is no telling what you might get from RANDOM POST. Everything from a repurposed envelope from an old FDC or a new drawing based on a new Stamp (Let me know if you are a Jimmy Hendrix Fan). You could get a drawing from 10 years ago that I played with or a totally new watercolor painting on a card or envelope. If you’re interested in the FDC idea, I can also resend one with new postage. You may give me a hint to your preferences or let your random luck take over. If your interested in trading ATC’s just let me know.

As Postmaster General of RANDOM POST I have started issuing stamps that I place on mail or can send inside an envelope for trade or for sale. There has been some political activity in my imaginary domain and the various regions want to issue their own postage.  Soon I should be issuing stamps for the State of Confusion and the State of Desire.  With the expected fight for territory in my muddled brain, I will probably have to create a number of overprints.

Happy Mailing

Hey, Greg! Your ATC arrived here on Fidalgo Island and is one of my very favorites--the stamp of the windmill, the horse and the guy with a load. I'm in the midst of leaving for a few days but will try to get this scanned and up for everyone to enjoy. Here's to more happy trading.
