The Music Boekie - by Cheryl Penn [spoiler alert: contains Elvis made entirely of guitars]

Music was the first theme for the official kick off of Cheryl's New Alexandrian Library. She is sending one of her books back for every work she is getting, and as usual I'm on the winning side. Her book is an ode to music, to the poetry in all music, to its many facets.

We know she is an extremely talented painter, drawer, photographer, and her latest pieces have confirmed that her writing is in a different league as well. All of this can be found in this book, a window on music. I was about to say music made art, but of course music is a form of art in its own right.

[from the book]

Innate
Inherent
Intrinsic
Integral
Essential
The Act The Jump
The Work The Dance
Sacred Ritual
Authentic Mining
Of the Soul
Do you Hear?

I love the painting on soft and thick canvas, the way the text is printed on it as well (how does she do that??). But I think the icing on the cake is...

...Elvis made entirely of guitars! He is the star of the book. On the cover and inside. And again, how did she do that?? Absolutely smashing, I love it! Cheryl, thank you for this fab Number One, I am very much looking forward to more from The New Alexandrian Library!

I had a computer melt-down yesterday. My apple became a banana.  Tell you what Dean - send me a boekie - I have one left - you'll get it. About the taking it to China part - um- N-O!! There are Em Bar Codes on these sort of times. De Villo - thank you for your observations - spot on as usual - although - as I've said to you before,  I always start with an idea - and a notion of where I'm going, but  the work takes over mostly - it generally has a strong voice - like the king I'm guessing.

Reversal - I'm going to look that up in this context???

I'm relieved I did not cut this up to make cushions... yes, that was my thought before this... Wait till you see my Oscar Wilde - he's made of letters and words  :-) X

A crowd drawer indeed.  I keep coming back to have another look at this one.  If only I could get the original from Marie, take it to China and have is mass produced ... alas Non.

Sorry, didn't realize that was the cover. You're right; the tension is more ironic and consistent. Look, what is a simpler thing we can learn from this? The King can still draw a crowd.

Thank you additional-genkis-who-commented-while-I-was-sleeping. I'm glad this book got the attention it deserves. And even from blue mouse! DVS, the "shift" isn't that sharp. Elvis guitars make the cover. Then, it doesn't show on the blog but the first page is a close up on Elvis' face. And then he shows up again towards the end. Elvis is the beginning and the end of all music :-)))

Wonderful effects in a lovely work, Cheryl...  I wonder what Elvis interpretting a piece of Debussy would have sounded like?

Why am I at a loss here? Somewhere, sometime, somehow in the vast labyrinth of IUOMA have I not blogged this music boekie from Cheryl??? Can't find it anywhere...and yet i so remember posting these fantastic pages! Marie this is a great blog...Cheryl does a wonderful job of making her art sing! It is true that the texture of the printed canvas is amazing..the colors, the images, even the aroma are so beautifully created in all of Cheryl's work! A joy to receive:

"The Sigh, the Beat, the Fragrance...the Consummate Whole"!

Thank you, Cheryl. xxx

blue mouse has seen it and loves it, too :-)

Cheryl can be non-linear & use disrupted narrative, but the shift from "high culture" to this Elvis image that you could probably sell outside the Graceland Mansion in Memphis, Tenn. to fans who have come to tour the "Jungle Room" in the Elvis basement is a sharp turn. Yes Marie, I think the attention to every detail - no matter how technically difficult - is what makes it.
