Katerina -- do you think you might have a Chinese doppelganger who somewhere has boxes of old British stamps hidden away (and who might be looking for a good home for them)? If so, please ask her to get in touch with me. Thanks! Val

The news has been full of Yuribits including this from Mary Roach's article in the Times yesterday...There's a 127 foot sculpture of Yuri in...hmmm Moscow?...and Yuri himself was 5' 2". He said of his space flight: He wasn't sure if he was the first man in space or the last dog, a reference to his status as human cargo rather than a manipulator of his own fate. It occurs to me that I missed several great existential predicaments posed by Yuri in his capsule, adrift in the heavens without a hand on the rudder.

Let's see...10,000 Penny Black stamps in China's population of one BILLION, 336 million plus people. Not too many to spread around actually, eh?

The Chinese are taking over!!

In Tuesday's edition of the British 'Daily Telegraph', I read that the famous UK stamp collecting company Stanley Gibbons has almost exhausted its stock of the iconic Penny Balck stamps (the world's first ever postage stamp, from 6 May 1840) after a Chinese company placed an order for 10,000 of them.

Stanley's CEO was quoted as saying, "We normally sell no more than a hundred penny blacks in any given year, so this trade order reates a demand 100 times the normal market size."

I wonder what the Chinese are up to: any ideas,

(I have a large collection of Penny Reds and wqonder if this level of Chinese demand for very early stamps will increase their value -- not that I plan to sell them)

Regards, Val

Sad bit of UK postal news for future historians: mail has decreased by 20% in the last 5 years. Stamp prices are increasing by 12% next week. Obviously there are not enough active UK mail artists to make up for all the lost volume and keep the prices down. Regards, Val

Good work, Nikki! Yes....but we are keeping "TOP SECRET" what comes in through that astroid belt, and what goes out....until Apollo13, er, I mean until April13! ;-) (Top orders from Mission Commander, he says)

re The Mission

Apollo 2 Commander spent the last three day cutting/pasting over 100 pcs, making envelopes/labels, sorting stamps ... all of which are expected for a Thursday departure...hopefully to set down in faraway lands in good time!

Have rec'd 4 celebratory pieces of mail art thus far ...

Mission Control to all Astronauts!

I fear we are being observed by aliens -- reported to be the Intergalactic Union of Mail Artists (IUOMA) which is trying to pass itself off as the International Union of Mail Artists (IUOMA): you will see where the deliberate confusion arises..

We must remain vigilant and not compromise our security by posting images of what we are doing until AFTER our Mission has returned to earth succesfully.

So Mission Control respectfully respects that you maintainan image blackout until at least the 13th of April. Then (it is hoped) our Image Archivist will compile a file of our space mailing triumphs.
Over and Out,

Mission Control
