Comment by Heleen de Vaan on August 20, 2014 at 10:45pm: I was re-reading the book about W. Reginald Bray, also known as 'The Englishman who posted himself and other curiosities'.

And I discovered this crocheted envelope! Over 110 years old!

It has been created by his mother, Mary Bray, who sewed a small piece of card to it to affix the postage stamps.
The address was not that extended in those days (October 1899).

I want to post a photo and my thanks to Gina Ulgen for sending me this wonderful card, all the way from England. Gina: it's a long way to Texas, I couldn't get Google Maps to tell me how far, it seems to be stymied by the ocean... I can't believe you apologized for not sewing this yourself. It's so great! I think it's time for me to get my sewing machine warmed up, or figure out how to put Hardanger embroidery on a postcard!
