A good lesson learnt from Bifidus and the Crimson Giant

Bifidus wrote and asked if I had looked in the envelope?

Confession time! I had not. For some obscure reason I had read into his work that the envelope should remain closed, that there was nothing inside, that symbols had no opening/business being interpreted ("Any symbol caught not being identical to itself is subject to automatic ejection, a $10000 fine and 12 hours community service"). I had read his work a certain way, but his… Continue

Received: New-Old School mail-art, bunny stamps by Miss James (Brooklyn, New York, USA)

October 16, 2010 - Miss James did not make my day. She made my week, my month. I picked up my mail at the PO very early Saturday morning. Immediately I saw the NYNY stamp on the front and the Brooklyn address on the back and her beautiful artwork. Miss James sent me a special set of her bunny stamps, which I have seen at the IUOMA. This set is perfect for Halloween, although there is… Continue

From Bifidus The Crimson Giant Part 2

With great elation I received the first return mail for the collaborative mail art book The Crimson Giant from Bifidus Jones.

I asked Bifidus to please explain some of his thoughts in the compilation of his work.

He wrote this:

"Gertrude Stein, an American writer, came up with the "Rose is a rose" line in a poem entitled “Sacred Emily”--written in the… Continue

Otto von Bismarck mail art call - from Roland Halbritter

A second Luftpost closely followed the first one. This is a mail art call from Roland Halbritter in Nüdlingen.

I love my scanner, but I have to say that it didn't do a great job with this texture. The postcard is actually shiny and has this metallic sliver/gold feel to it.

The call is about Otto von Bismarck, I refer you to Roland's blog about it:… Continue

Received: Mail-art of the Nihil from Eduardo Cardoso (Portugal)

September 14, 2010 - Eduardo Cardoso sent me mail-art that has been long-awaited. And this piece was worth the wait because it is for me such an original statement that becomes part of the dialog of mail-art visual poetry at the IUOMA. First, Eduardo has called this piece "Tears." There is an artist's reason for this, but it is not about IUOMA. Tania - and I am sure Eduardo - add our… Continue

For the Project The World is a Town from Frank Odette and Stefano Fossiant Sini

I received the first mail for the Project "The World is a Town" from Australia and Italy - now I will HAVE to dismantle the book TODAY, and it will begin a new life in Mail Art. Frank sent a very interesting sort of hyper-palimpsest - a page that has been written on over and over so that previous traces of writing are visible. He did this on a glossy photographic paper, scoring the sheet and then rubbing in charcoal (Right Frank??). You did some research…

From Marie At Last The Lonely Crimson Giant and The Hollow Men

A 'then' story: I had been waiting for so long for Marie's mail and then it arrived: the alone-ness of the man in the image was very striking: then Marie wrote the blog about the loneliness of the Crimson Giant walking away from the Tower of Babel: then I photographed an old work I had done which is in a head-office in Johannesburg, filled with Hollow Men (T.S.Elliot) inspired by a…

What guides them, what they regard as right or wrong; how they view them- - for Cheryl Penn

I sent this postcard to Cheryl before knowing of the Crimson Giant. And when I look at it now I see it as a prelude to the book, or as a coincidence of some kind. I see the Giant, walking away from the Tower of Babel, feeling sad and lonely. Sad of not being able to communicate with people even though he understands all the languages they are speaking. Lonely not being able to approach them, so close yet so far.

Anyway, I'm glad the card… Continue

JG Update

Dear Fellow MA Enthusiasts,

Sorry I have been quiet for so long. Been busy with school and the debut tonight of my feature film, The Defiled. I've squeezed in a lithography class in my off hours and am about ready to send out prints in the next couple weeks based on my first attempts. I'm pretty happy overall.

For February 2011, I'm currently completing beta tests on an animated short based on a lovely song from "The Clockwork Quartet" and attached is the art from a recent… Continue
