Mary Anne, you have come up with a great name for this project:  Hannah Hoch's Birthday Box  ...quite catchy.

Am getting excited. Austin Public Library has one copy of The Photomontages of Hannah Höch and I have placed a hold on it and am number one in the queue.

I agree with Mary Anne that it would be quite interesting, if everyone  would make they own box. I rather love to look at flea markets and there you could find also fitting and cheap things. 

Meanwhile I have checked the fees for the post office. In Germany you can send a  fat letter when it is 12,5 cm x 23, 5 cm and 1 cm high at an agreeable fee. Otherwise it get's really expensive. So I would just take these measures for my "birthday present".

A Cascadia of questions.

The idea was that everyone found/made their own boxes.  If they did it at the end of the project, they could make it a fitting size but everyone's would probably be different.  There are flat-pack boxes on E-bay quite cheap if anyone wanted to post the box as well as the artwork.

I don't think anyone involved has much experience of organising a project like this so it is a case of making-it-up-as-we-go-along. I think the fewer rules the better but I will follow the herd whatever it thinks best.

The Cascadia Artpost perspective: (1) Who is constructing boxes? We have constructed boxes with an opening lid in the past, but 130 boxes would be a formidable project. In a past collaborative project with 30 participants I constructed 15 boxes, and a friend another 15. The custom box part of the project for 30 boxes took 2 months to complete. (2) Another question: What will be the dimensions of the box? Or up to the maker? (3) Boxes can be spendy to mail, particularly to international addresses; on the Cascadia Artpost project, the 14 boxes to participants outside the U.S. cost $15 each to mail plus time at the local post office for a clerk to process customs forms (we took 4-5 at a time to the PO so three trips). (4) Cascadia Artpost would be capable of producing multiple copies of a mini artistamp sheet by/before 01-Nov but not sure about a box or boxes as materials would need to be procured. --- So, back to the first two questions determining logistics. The name "Hannah Hoch's Birthday Box" is catchy, though.

Sensible Charlotte - everything right!

130 artists works out at about three artists a week - just a thought.  We would need to find big boxes . . .

Hi Mary Anne, I think the name for the project is perfect! But perhaps the deadline being the 01.11.2019 would be a bit tight... I am still working and I don't know what about the others... What about the end of November? I also love the idea of 130 pieces throughout her 130th year, but it is rather a lot, and it is no good, if the pieces are just made to fill the box.

Hannah Hoch's Birthday Box

How's that for a snappy title?  This coming November the first would have been Hannah's 130th birthday.  Is it too tight to have that as a deadline?  If it is we could run the project until her birthday 2020, i.e. throughout her 130th year.  Too much to hope we could get 130 pieces of work or maybe 130 artists?  Wouldn't that be good??

My enthusiasm is beginning to run away . . .
