As I crept between the sheets last night I promised myself that today I would stay at home and put some effort into the audio work but when I woke up this morning the sun was shining brightly. So, after a trip to a supermarket on the other side of the Rialto Bridge to buy in supplies for the weekend Liz and me had a light breakfast and grabbed the cameras and went out to explore the area between this apartment and Ferrovia the location of the railway station. We wandered around for a couple of hours, rarely knowing where we were.
Today my Icelandic friend Saevar invited me to join the gang on a fishing trip, walk and chill out weekend at the summer house at the beginning of July in an area of Iceland that I have not explored. I accepted the invitation without hesitation, it means I will have to spend a month in Iceland instead of the originally planned 3 weeks… but I’ll just have to live with the change or not? For those of you who are new to VEC activity, I go to Iceland every year whenever possible; this year will be my 18th visit in 25 years. I am most fortunate in that I have many much loved friends on the island of Ice & Fire. Recently Helgi and Saevar and I began making performances for still camera and video in a series called ‘Aimless Gardening’, and during the winter H & S have begun a new series called ‘Aimless Fishing’ if you want to see videos of our performances go to Youtube and search for videos by VECDOR. Several of my Icelandic friends feature on my latest audio drama Helgisaga II, most of which was recorded in Reykjavik; the CD is available from VEC AUDIO.
But I am here now and enjoying the experience to the full, I don’t know how many photos we took today as I haven’t checked them out yet but a selection will be hanging underneath this text.
Bless Bless
Today I read that Ruud has lost his brother following 3 months of illness, share the sadness of our social network benefactor.

I admit to being a little bit guilty. I came here full of good intentions to carry out the two projects I had assigned to myself but then, almost immediately after my arrival, I became seduced by the light of this city and, instead of spending my days making contact with those poets and artists that I had determined to meet and photograph, or concentrating on gathering sound samples and working them into a composition to be titled ‘Solutions’, I have spent my days giving way to the avariciousness of my camera lens and have wandered, often completely lost, in search of the golden photographic moment.
It is true that I have made over 1000 photographs, many of which I consider most satisfactory, but there are too many artists who I didn’t contact when I should have done so. The realization of this dawned on me today when I noted that I have only 11 days left here. It is also true that I have made appointments for next week with both Anna Boschi and Tiziana Baracci. So from the 10 or 11 intended sitters I will, by the time my residency is completed, only have photographed 7.
I do have a small excuse for my failure that being the fact that it has been necessary to make use of webmail instead of my normal email programme which has allowed me to receive mail but not to send any. The webmail programme does not retain email addresses and, try as I might, I could not access my email address book from the webmail programme. Being isolated from my normal email activity has, at times, been close to traumatic. I am happy that Skype worked so well apart of course from those all too frequent occasions when the Internet connection fell out.
As to the sound work, well I have taken it as far as I can with the somewhat limited audio manipulation software I have on this laptop. I have realized the final working into a composition will have to wait until I am back at home behind a real computer connected to an amplifier and real loud speakers.
This is enough text for today, I want to go out into the beautiful light now and photograph the Bridge of Sighs.
Thanks for reading
