Why I am involved in Mail-Art:
Lars Schumacher (born 1971) is a contemporary artist working at the intersection of Mail Art, Conceptual Art, and relational forms of Social Sculpture. Since the fall of the wall, Schumacher has developed a visual language rooted in communication, exchange, and the aesthetics of minimal gestures.

His practice engages with the global Mail Art movement as a democratic, transnational artistic network. Through postal interventions, stamp works, typographic miniatures, and serial paper pieces, Schumacher explores the micro‑politics of connection: art as message, art as relation, art as a shared space between sender and receiver.

Schumacher’s work resonates with the legacy of Fluxus and the New York Correspondence School while establishing a distinct contemporary position. His international exchanges and collaborations with artists whose contributions have shaped the international evolution of postal and conceptual art.

In 2012, Schumacher contributed to artistic research formats in the context of dOCUMENTA (13), further anchoring his practice within global discourses on process‑based and relational art.

He is a member of Fluxus Central Europe, Medienhaus, and h1 – Television, and co‑founder of Kunstraum MITTE37, where he develops exhibitions, collections, and dialogical formats that expand the field of postal and conceptual art.

Schumacher’s work investigates the infrastructures of communication. His postal interventions and serial paper works operate as micro‑archives of human connection, revealing how minimal gestures—marks, stamps, fragments—can generate relational space. His practice positions Mail Art not as nostalgia, but as a contemporary, democratic system of artistic circulation.

Art as Democratic Field: Neukölln’s 48 Hours and the Open Studio

Posted on July 4, 2026 at 3:00pm 0 Comments

Walking along Reuterstraße on a Saturday in June, one senses immediately that Neukölln has entered one of its characteristic states of artistic exception. Doors stand open, people gather in loose constellations, and installations emerge from materials that only yesterday were discarded. In the rear building of Reuterstraße 84, artist Rainer…
