There must be billions of them in the world. We pass them every day. We walk on them. We do not take any notice of them. They are heavy, and usually made of cast iron. They come in many different shapes, sizes and patterns. Look, and you will find them everywhere.

What are they? MANHOLE COVERS, that provide access to local service systems such as water, electricity, gas, and telecommunications.

Bedankt Heleen. I remember drinking orange-coloured beer in the Netherlands of King's Day (and drinking green-coloured beer in Ottawa on St Patrick's Day).

Thanks Bradford, It keeps him busy. Japanese regional authorities often commissison artists to design an paint coloured manhole covers, but, alas, Daavid hasn't come across any....hyet

David Herman is doing a fine job of documention in Japan!  There seems to be no end to the variety of elegant artifacts he is recording.
