Wanna Put a Body to this Head?

So I like to mess around with a  friend of mine a little bit. I'm asking you guys if you'd like to help with a little good natured fun. Basically, if you're interested, I will send you some paper heads (or you can print them off) and then you work them into a collage. The entries that I've already received are amazing. All of them will be displayed. Let me know if you're…

Faux NBS Kit put to use by the notorious David Stafford U.S.

Awhile ago, I sent David a kit to make a Fake Nancy Bell Scott. She has sent me her luscious art scraps and ephemera for years now and is has always been inspiring. I sent some to David to see what he would make. This is what he sent me. You never know what will spring forth from David's mind so I was quite confused when I saw this album cover. I worried how I was going to find a record player for this vintage vinyl? afterall my kids had never seen one until they had a display of them in…

March 2014

I took some time away from drawing this month to work on “The Butterfly Collector” for the Penny Dreadful project. I used the concept of negative space and structured the composition around silhouettes and shadows. The aim was to create an eerie atmosphere and…

washing or art on new years day?

Happy New year everyone! I have woken to a beautiful, breezy, sunny day after days of drizzle, thunderstorms and wet washing. But wait: does this mean I must hang the washing....Not likely. What it means is that any painting I do will dry quickly - and painting is obviously much more appropriate for new years day. Plus I had an early night while my family were revelling, so I've got peace and quiet while they slumber blissfully. I hope luck smiles on your new years day too - and into the future…

February 2014

The challenge this month was to further develop my tonal modelling through a number of representional still life compositions. I needed to overcome the tyranny of line by avoiding line drawing altogether. Through this process, I discovered that the lost and found lines in a drawing become immediately more apparent, enabling me to create line through the use of tone alone. To achieve lost lines I am using an eraser and leaving the canvas white or lightly shaded. I am also beginning to assess…

January 2014

Looking back at the first month of regular drawing practice, I can see where my use of  tonal variation has improved. The perspective in ‘Swains Lane, Boxing Day’ is good, but although I have included tonal variations, they are not very subtle and I have struggled with them, due to an unresponsive pencil. I have been using a 2B pencil, which does not have sufficient…
