Some mail artists add a stamp print to their mail art, saying 'Hannah Hoch Fan Club'.
Until I received these stamp prints I never had heard of this artist, who was born 1st of November 1889. She has been a collage / photomontage pioneer. She was part of the Dada movement and also became involved in the De Stijl art movement.
For anyone who has a Hannah Höch Fan Club Stamp (and interested others, I haven't one), this group can be the place to share your thoughts and mail art, tributing to and/or inspired by Hannah Höch.

Dear Mary Anne! Unfortunately I did not scan the envelope, but the card inside. But I love to think that there must be a hen-lover among the post officers, because I had a nice fat hen on it.
What you read about Hannah being the only woman in that male community, I get the impression that the men were constantly trying to be the most witty and provocative. Baader and Hausmann thought so, naming themselves "Oberdada" etc. I think Kurt Schwitters ( acting solo) appreciated her work really as an artist, they wrote each other, planned things together and so on. And she lived an unusual life for a woman in Germany in the new Weimarer Republic.
and you are quite right Mary Anne, the dolls must have been a shock at that time!
Did you keep a scan of the envelope that went missing? There is a group here on IUOMA for 'lost mail', so if you put it up there at least it won't be entirely lost; a shadow will remain.
Hopefully our little group here will spread the word about Hannah. but I hope her work is appreciated for what it is and not just because it was done by a woman. I have read things that say she was not valued by the other (male) dadaists because of her gender. I am not certain I entirely believe that. Instead they seem to have thought her work to nice, too well made. Too much like the art they were protesting against. I know about the dolls though I wonder what they would have looked like to the people of the day? Things are so different now it is hard to imagine how shocking Dada and the Surrealist were when they were new.
I hope you don't loose many more envelopes. Don't be discouraged. Take it as a compliment that maybe, someone saw it and just couldn't live without it . . .
Hi Mary Anne, I don't think that there are 130 mail artist active at the moment and I also think that a lot of them doesn't know or care about Hannah Höch. Even in Germany where she has been honoured by several great expositions and this very good biography, a lot of people think of Kurt Schwitters or R. Haussmann if you mention "Dada". Do you know that she made some witty Dada-dolls? They are kept in Berlin and are quite an inspiration! I think I will bring my pieces a bit earlier to the post office, it is not safe and I will not make the envelope too nice, because a very fine envelope just vanished with a real delicate thing on its way to California.
P.S. Carmen thought we were going to post our pieces out on the actual birthday (1st November) which is also a good idea and I am planning to do that as well. A pity that the postal authorities have become so unpredictable as far as postmarks are concerned as it would have been nice to have a consistent set. That is destined to be wishful thinking along with the 130 artists.
Actually, do you think there are 130 mail artists active at the moment?
I think so; at least that is what I have started to do. that way the list can be as long or short as becomes and no rules or pressure to conform to a pattern. I hope for wildness. I plan some Fluxus (sort of) and am looking forward to many visits from a puzzled postie . . .
oh well that's easily sorted. I have another idea all ready to go and a plan that should ensure a nice postmarked cover . . .
OK...little confused here but that is nothing new. I thought we were sending our originals/copies to everyone on the list on November 1. OR, is it that everything should be received by November 1? If that is the case, I better get really busy. Ha! Also, just wanted to verify the list of participants: Mary Anne, Cascadia, Heleen, Carmen, Visual Mom, and Charlotte
I have already started sending out partly because of enthusiasm, partly because my weeks are filled with doctors and such at the moment so don't want something untoward happening to prevent me.
