This morning I drove it to my P.O. I had planned to go in and beg that it be delivered to the person to whom it is addressed, and not be returned to me, the person on the clearly indicated return address. However, I was pulling my horse trailer behind my behemoth vehicle, and there was no place to park that would fit us in the P.O. lot, so I simply drove up to the drive-through line of boxes and stuffed it in unceremoniously--adding a new crease and a bit more postal patina to the piece. So now we shall see if it gets delivered or returned or dead-lettered, or Nixed'd

I think a nixie office must exist in England becasue sometimes I get really weirdly addressed envelopes.  Interesting reading about it.

I had no idea that such thing as Nixies would exist. Very interesting.

I don't know if nixie clerks, or a system like that, exists in Portugal. Never heard about it.

Uh Oh. The trash and pass boomerang mail got picked up on Saturday and was brought right back to me today. Stamps weren't cancelled which is good, because I put enough postage in this sucker to mail a smallish sailboat! Dirrect to to the PO tomorrow.

on facebook I posted a trashnpass piece that was correctly addressed yet came back twice undeliverable. It was first sent to the UK. I figured I might have better luck sending in the US--nope.. still came back. So I posted this fiasco over there and Marla Kittler posted this article. In all these years of my love affair with the mail, I had never heard of the 'nixie'. it goes far beyond the dead letter office that I imagined.

http://online.wsj.com/articles/SB1000142405297020439480457701212214...

so inspired by this discovery, I decided to send mail to the Nixie and hope for a response. I sent a postcard marked only to The Local Nixie. I wrote a little note saying I had just learned about them, what a fantastic job, and would they please write me a little note and send it back? I expected my card to come back to me in a day or two undeliverable , but instead I received this in the mail.

to my utter delight this was inside. A friend of mine who has worked for the post office for years SWORE Nixies didn't exist!!!

Some might say Trashpo is not capable of such eloquence, Martha. Your comments should be preserved as scripture.

"Jesus" Jim is, of course, Jim Leftwich, apparently like DK, at least part mortal.

Now to be serious: Trashpo ideologically is a protest against consumer culture and waste. Commitment to recycling is central on several levels. So your artist involvement has political affinities.

The recycling mail-art concept seems to have struck a chord. Nevermind's group still exists at the IUOMA, even if the Nevermind now walks in the great landfill. Some worthy ideas are probably recorded in that group.

DVS, having an anthology would be great, but i know how difficult it is to find the time for all the things one wants/ought/must do, so may be one day, when we all go to prison, we will all collaborate under your supervision. Meanwhile i am learning a lot from your short statements, muchas gracias!

I have an escatological (I assume Jesus Jim is going to return) point to mention: Jesus Jim must have said 'go nth and multiply' to DK, seeing how many of us have followed her.

And one must always be true to ones convictions or one cannot live with our selves. I must say I do not destroy others's work, only mine and at the point that it has failed, it is part of the process of creation. It happens when I think I have finished and go to have a cup of tea, if when I came back I go  puagh! it gets on the pile to be recycled as collage material. I never throw anything away.

My problem is a conflict of convictions or rather values; I am aware of the need to save the planet from being choked with stuff and yet I produce innumerable pieces of paper covered in paint, so my unanswered existencial question is: why do I do something when I could do nothing?

Comment by De Villo Sloan on November 16, 2014 at 10:21pm

Martha, Trashpo - at least in part - emerged from Rain Rien Nevermind's recycling mail-art group where DK was one of Rain Rien's favorites.

But as Trash scripture tells us: "The Nevermind cast out DK for roadkill and in the shadow of Wal Mart, Jesus Jim gave on to DK Trashpo and said 'Forgive the Nevermind' and go fourth (or third) and multiply."

Anyway, recycling mail-art is part of Trashpo. No question.

I don't want to make distinctions that one work is better than another, BUT there are, I think inarguably, Trashpo "classics" that are documented in the TrashPo Litzers, on people's blogs and in people's collections. Some of the early trashbooks belong in this category as well as work by Jim, DK and others. DKULTUK has contributed some of these as well. My aborted effort to create an anthology of Trashpo would have identified these classics.

I always am fighting a losing battle with my position, I think. There is an implied elitism in terms of arguing that certain works should be preserved and others dismantled - or they are fair game to be dismantled.

Still, I feel the necessity of remaining true to my convictions.
