This is a place to explore all things trashpo (Trash Poetry)and found objects.  Trashpo is 1) economical 2) environmentally responsible and 3) challenging. It's a great way to repurpose all the trash that our planet is buried in!

I love this conversation!!!!  Every thing is so well put and expressed!!!!

I think trashpo takes Duchamp's ready-mades to an entirely new level! since most trash is ready made unless we alter it... Keep the conversation going... very inspiring!!!!

RC!!! I didn't know you spoke with an Inspector Clouseau accent!!  RC is the master of packaging trashpo. From the very beginning I had intimate knowledge of what RC ate--or at least cooked in the microwave. It has set a precedent that I ALWAYS think of food related mail art to send to him. like the fact that just today I saw:  Banana split Twinkies, a box of crackers called "Shamu", and some other crackers called "Biocrackers". i immediately thought of RC. Trashpo began with packagepo and Sir RC is a master of this. I don't see how any trashpo could be compared to anyone or anything else, since the point to me at least, is that the found objects are something that happen in a specific place and time--a chronicle and slice of life that can never be repeated.  The only style is no style, and even within the no style, style is completely within the rules because there are no rules

12.08.15 Dare Ms. Grace Sanford (et al), ... I enjoy seeing your offerings here at the IUOMA.  I agree, it is somewhat difficult to escape one's past. I just can't seem to understand how anyone can possibly expect to create out of a void (especially in this day & age).  I'm of the opinion that we are all looking over each other's shoulder (especially again, here at the IUOMA). If I were a truly original artist I would have to invent "cave painting." Everything is okay( as far as I can tell) .  We are all just doing the best we can. Ave uh nez dae. Richard Canard

"Theory should emerge from the art; art should not emerge from the theory. That's what I think."

Yeah, for sure! Do art; pontification may or may not follow. If you've had an art education and your mind is filled with theory and definitions, it probably would be more difficult to create anything authentic, if ever. I've had more art education and discussion since joining IUOMA than I ever had before. I might be concerned about that, because I very much wish I had come upon the likes of Trashpo all on my own, as my own creation. Now I have all these inserted viewpoints I'm creating from, and the work will always be viewed through filters, and may even be filtered out. I feel destined to be derivative even without an art education. C'est la vie. Given my predilection for meaning and pattern, I doubt I would ever have made non-aesthetic anything LOL

My "Trashpo and the Individual Talent" (after T.S. Eliot's "Tradition and the Individual Talent") covers a lot of the issues raised here. Trashpo is specific to mail-art; it's not like anything recognized in the mainstream.

The best thing to do is look at the work. This is (what is considered) the first Trashbook made by DK in 2011:

2010_04140010 copy Doesn't look much like what people make now, does it?
