Such thoughtful, helpful answers from all of you! Thanks so much, Angie, Jan, Mim, and Richard. Richard, I couldn't agree more that it would be nice to have some guidelines. Jan, you have a valid point that caused me to wonder if getting my A&P back home each time should be considered an issue. At least I'm getting it back and able to send it to someone I know will keep it moving. So many interesting thoughts here. I appreciate all of them. What I'm hearing in response to my question is, then, that anything goes. I worry too much. I overthink. :-)

I think I'd be delighted at getting one back, since I add then never see them again, mostly. Guess it's good to send them to the people I know actually enjoy these and add and pass! Boo hoo.

I enjoyed reading your thoughts, Richard, and Angie & Snooky, and others. I have a number of A & P to work on - yes, put them back in envelopes to contemplate and now must de-envelope them and get to play on them. Sometimes, they make me groan - aaagh - too much going on. I'm a minimalist, you see. But then I get over it and Add & Pass.

It helps me to not be precious, not be critical, not be hesitant, not be timid. That's the deal!

15.03.15 Dare Ms. Terry O.,  ... You know, I've been troubled by this as well.  Every time I receive an "Add & Pass" I get confused all over again. Sometimes, I just add something to it & pass it on as instructed. ...& sometimes, I will subtract some tidbit (which can be considered a form of "adding")from the "Add & Pass" & send it on to a specific individual. Other times, I compare & calculate the existing total of images by the available remaining spaces & gave it much more thought than it ever deserved...not to mention,  I've been know to make xerox copies & send them out to a multitude of people (as well as, add to the copies individually & send them out to a multitude of people). I'm sure there are other variables that I've just forgotten & or can't remember. Plus, no doubt there are other possibilities here. ... & too, there have been occasions in which I received an "Add & Pass  & merely placed it back in the envelope in order to think further  on the piece,  completely forgot it & it just ended up in one of  the multitude of cardboard boxes here....but this is a serious problem  & needs to be addressed. Mail art is a rational & increasingly expensive  demanding activity & we can no longer afford or tolerate a  lax libertarian attitude of "there are no rules in mail art". I would certainly like to know what is the correct way to deal with an "Add & Pass". Signed & sighed Richard Canard  ... Post Scriptum: I hope you will send me one of your "Add & Pass" mailings. I have a question about how people mail A&P's they receive. Do you send it back to the person who it originated from or do you send it to another person to work on, and they in turn send it to another person to work on? I'm asking because I sent out my first A&P about 2 months ago. It went to 3 people (so far) and each time it was returned to me. At first, I thought I had worded my instructions wrong so I changed them to read "Please add and pass, and when full, return to ...". It still came back to me. If this is what is supposed to happen, I've been doing it wrong by sending the A&P's I receive to others to work on, not the originator. Thanks for any feedback.
