The Peace Crane Project for Japan

THE ONE THOUSAND PEACE CRANE GOAL HAS BEEN REACHED AS OF 1/6/12. (PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY MORE PEACE CRANES.)

Thank you to everyone who made peace cranes!

There's a story told in Japan that if you make a thousand origami Peace Cranes, you or someone you love will be healed. This group is for those who wish to make an origami Peace Crane which will then be sent to the Hiroshima Peace Museum.

I just wanted to pass along this beautiful thought that I received in a message from TICTAC about the making of peace cranes for this project:

"...It is interesting how the process of making an origami crane has a sort of ceremonial feel inside a meditative one...apart from having its very spiritual meaning."

Thanks, snow. In looking at the instructions posted in the group, it seems I'm very close to conquering the task. Looking at my practice pieces, I did everything right at least once, but I never did everything right at the same time. I think I'll get there! (I tried to post this as a reply to your message but that button isn't working at my house today.)

Just a quick update regarding the paper size to use - I've received several dozen peace cranes and it seems that they can be a larger size and still be able to send the total number of them economically.  As of today, if anyone is interested in making peace cranes and they prefer to use a larger sheet of paper, you can go up to 25x25cm (10x10"), or make them smaller if you'd rather.  The size guideline will be anything from 10 to 25cm.

Thanks again to everyone who has been sending them - The response has been fantastic!  Also, thank you for the personal notes and mailing envelopes that have been included with original mail art on them!

Thanks to the person who posted the fine link with instructions:

I spent three hours the other day using youtube videos and various printed directions and photos as guidelines and never managed to get a crane to turn into a crane. This link, though, shows every step clearly. I'm going to put this link on facebook as well.

The children of 6º Grade "9 de Julio" Primary School from Rosario (Argentina) have been making Peace Cranes to send for this project. I think they will post them in a few days.

I just wanted to say a quick THANK YOU to everyone who has been sending the Peace Cranes!  The response has been really great.

Also, many people are sending personal messages along with the cranes, and I would encourage you to do so.  I think it will be a wonderful addition to send personal notes along with the cranes to the Hiroshima Peace Museum.

If there's anyone out there who has a connection with their local schools or other youth groups, and you think they might be interested in participating in this project, I would encourage you to get them involved!

Thanks again everyone.  I will try and make some photos of the Peace Cranes I've received and will post as soon as I can.

I am new to IUOMA and still am trying to find my way around..... I like origami and am currently trying to perfect origami envelopes.

Please tell me where to send the cranes.... I make them with authentic Japanese paper that travelled to my house from our Japanese exchange students. Our university is making 1000 cranes as a fund raiser for Red Cross, with huge community interest.
