Whilst listening to the Tomita version of Holst’s Planet Suite.
The weather has moved on and today was bright. Cold yes, wet no, at least, not from the top down. I had several appointments today (for several read two). I was scheduled to lunch at the Emily Harvey Foundation and to make a portrait of Maurizio Follin.
Once out of bed and awake in a relative sort of way I headed for the market and bought a bag full of vegetables. I dropped them off at the apartment and headed in the other direction looking for the COOP supermarket that is situated about 200 metres from here, it didn’t take long to locate it which was more by luck than navigation, Venice is the easiest place to get lost in, that is one of its charms. At the COOP I bought groceries for the weekend, pasta, oil, dried chilli peppers, butter, you know the kind of thing. I also bought two litres of water, the water from the tap seems quite potable but I noticed the locals don’t drink it so it seemed sensible to follow their example.
Maurizio suggested we meet at the UNESCO office which is on the other side of the Rialto Bridge from my apartment so, as I had a bit of time before my lunch appointment, I decided to wander over to take a look for the place. I couldn’t find it and therefore asked the red haired lady in the newspaper office who, incidentally, appears in one of the photos on this blog. She was very gracious and smiling and gave me directions to the building. I said to her “I made some photographs of you the other day” she answered “With my dog?” and proceeded to show me a photograph of her with a Labrador. “No” I said “You are much more beautiful in my photographs.” “Thank you.” She answered and gave me a smile. I left and soon located the UNESCO building. As I returned she was closing the kiosk she gave me an enquiring thumbs up, I answered with an affirmative thumbs up. I came back to the apartment and copied the three photos I had made of her onto a CD.
Just then Henry Martin from the EHF phoned to ask where I was, I was late for my lunch appointment at the Foundation!
Lunch was a very pleasant affair, with Davidson Gigliotti, Henry Martin, Berty Skuber and three other artists in residence courtesy of the EHF who will forgive me for not having their names here. Henry you bake a wicked chocolate cake! Berty you make beautiful work, thank you for the books and cards, Davidson you have a great taste in music. Thank you.
Soon after four I made my excuses and left the gathering to find my way back to the UNESCO building for the portrait session with Maurizio. Whilst back at the apartment to pick up the camera and tripod I slipped the CD of the kiosk lady into my pocket, and lo & behold I met her on my way to meet Maurizio, when I gave her the CD she blew me a kiss. Such things make my day.
The session with Maurizio went quickly and smoothly, he was accompanied by Simonetta Borrelli a web designer so I photographed them together. I think you will agree Maurizio wears his pipe well!
Tomorrow sees the arrival of my friend Enzo Minarelli for his portrait session, I am very fond of Enzo, he features strongly in VEC mythology and I am looking forward to his visit.
Below a selection of today’s crop of pictures.

I can't find Palazzo Zorri on my map, where abouts is it, I see Castello is where Arsenale is.
