I ate too much yesterday and suffered some heavy dreams as a consequence, interesting dreams though, of rushing rivers on mountain tops, garden sheds and looking for a bus stop. Dreams full of many well defined characters… but heavy.
Another splendid day spent with good company under a cloudless sky, and over 100 photographs taken.
This morning I met Emilio and Franca on the Rialto Bridge and from there we walked to The Arsenal, the area of Venice where boats were built in the days when boats were built by chipping at planks of wood with an adze.
The organisation ‘Thetis’ is restoring the area with an aim to revitalising the expansive space which had become abandoned apart from one area where there are working dry docks. The restoration is a massive undertaking but the work appears to be well in hand.
After the bloke in the blue box had let us into the area we were met by Antonietta Grandesso and her assistant Eleonora Maierle who together bear the cultural responsibility for the restoration project.
Throughout the gardens there are contemporary sculptures from such eminent artists as Beuys, which have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and are now retained at The Arsenal for safe keeping.
Antonietta and Eleonora were most gracious, giving us a guided tour of the area and informing me of the historical detail.
Before we left I made the above portrait of Antonietta and Eleonora, Antonietta is standing on the right.
It was difficult to make a selection from all the photographs I took today, but with a grim determination I whittled the list down to these 9, enjoy. I felt compelled to include one of the hand-held photos I took last night as it has all the feelings of romantic intrigue often associated with this city.
Thanks to Ruud for letting me share this experience with you.

The day dawned bright... I expect, I didn't wake up 'til nine!

This morning Emilio and Franca Morandi called from the offices of the Foundation then walked round to this apartment. We walked out together to have a look at the Rialto Bridge to get some idea of how we will do our performance there on Saturday, then on to their apartment for lunch. Then we had the portrait session. (see below)
We walked back via St Mark's Square which was thick with the click of digital cameras. Impressive place! I will go and look again after carnival is over.
Carnival has seriously broken out, the streets are packed with tourists and I bumped into some of the most spectacular costumes imaginable.
I am going to dine with the Morandi's this evening.
