Even though it makes sense that we can look on each others profiles, you may want to add your address here and any blogs or other accounts you want highlighted. This way it's in a closed environment and we all get to share.

What's your default? 7 Replies

Because my friend Matt asked me this the other night, I had to think about it. His is painting a blue sky and some clouds, then he waits to see if anything more comes. His skull for Skull Appreciation Day was just the blue sky & clouds cause…Continue

Who will you send  your first piece of mail to? I've been thinking about this a lot. Will it be someone in this group? Will it be one of the many mail artists I've exchanged MA with over the years? Will it be one of my letter writing friends, or my…Continue

Significant dates for the diary (some might say...) 41 Replies

McFloozy mentioned Quack Day in February and I had a message from Valentine Mark Hermann telling me of an anniversary in February. I figured that it would be best to put all the dates in one discussion, so anyone could contribute and we could all…Continue

The important thing is that we consider mailart as a part of our lives for a year I guess and that we have fun. Everyone knows a 365 never really happens every day for a year and people will batch post a week in advance or go on holiday and no-one will hold it against them. After all, we are all humans and have other things to do as well.

All in the spirit of fun I say! It would be quite amazing to see the collection of a group of mailartists in the spirit together for a year though. Can't wait to see what happens and would be especially keen to see if anyone manages to send them all at once!

What's needed is a Mail Art call to a) all IUOMA members (alive, dead, comatose, or just drunk and asleep nder the bar), and b) the whole wide world.
Then we'll see...and still no jury, returns, etc.
Regards, Val

Pas de problem, Val, it'll all work out some way. Some people won't complete the project, some people will, no one will chastise those who don't (right, Andy?) and we'll have some fun along the way. It's all about having fun! Or, at least, that's how I look at it. No jury, no return, no gallery director, no sales, no reviews (ugh, those negative reviews) just FUN! And the satisfaction of being part of the project.

1374 members or 203 addresses? There's a big difference there. Somehow we need to know how many of either the 1374 or the 203 are 'live'. I suspect many of them are 'dead' like some of the Groups, Discussions, etc. Perhaps Ruud and/or the system administrator (if there is one) will have details of 'traffic flows'. Regards, Val

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but the logistics and organisation of this make me think that it won't work perfectly. Even with 365 people, some will be sick, forget about it, not get to the mail box, miss the day's mailing, won't be bothered etc. I think we'll need 365 + another say 10 per cent. Then things will get lost in the post. Then...
Somehow it needs to be some sort of sequential process; things are ongoing over weeks or months, but there is a cut-off when the magic number of 365 is reached.
The magic number of 365 is important -- a project that reaches say 318 won't have the same meaning.
Please can someone clarify one thing for me: will I be asked to mail 365 different items to 365 different people at the same time? If so, I would use up something like 15 weeks of my self-imposed mail art budget in one week...resulting in a) a big hole in the ongoing weekly budget and no money for food, drink, petrol, etc, and b) no other mail art for the next 14 weeks -- I don't want to be in that position.
Or am I being unduly pessimistic and overly mean?
Regards, Val

Okay, the challenge gets bigger, how to increase the number of addresses! Maybe, we can do some repeats? I have about 5 or 6 mail friends (not Mail Artists) letter writers who I'll add to my list. Maybe I'll add complete strangers or authors whose work I like, hmmm. Just thinking about this as I prepare to create Mail Art is such fun. I've finished my project of making stuff other than Mail Art (58 items for a shop) and will now turn to preparing for the 365 MA. Tomorrow, I'm going to start cutting out postcard blanks.

Here's a quote from the best-selling English author Lynne Truss in the Introduction to Harriet Russel's fantastic 'Envelopes' book:
"I can't remember the last time I sent a letter to myself. Generally, the act of auto-mailing is committed only a) if you are entirely friendless, but pathetically want to pretend otherwise; b) in quite complicated legal situations, when a sealed, registered self-sent envelope can be used as proof of dating; or c) by mistake, when drunk."
There is a fourth category that lynne didn't consider: Mail Art

The more I think about this, the happier I am. The experience of doing once a day art on my own was great, and I think the experience of doing it as part of a community will be a different and expansive process. Way to go, Andy.

Genius that I am, I figured out how to send you my address. Also, I LOVE the idea of mailing 365 postcards on December 1, 2011; but I won't manage to wait that long. But if anybody does, we're going to need some photos!

Yes,Andy, I'm still ripping my book to shreds and playing with fabric. I've been a little off my feed for a few months but am returning to life again now. You know that blog was one piece of mail art a day originally, but then one thing and another came up. So I'm glad to begin again. I've chopped up all my cereal boxes for that very reason! And I'll send you my address as soon as I figure out how. Boo
