November 29, 2015 - Oakland correspondent Joey Patrickt has been sending me FAB missives at intervals during the past months. I am thrilled to be able to share a collection of them with you today.

And From the Posturban Front

In August, I documented work by Joey Patrickt that introduced me to his concept of the “posturban.”

I was intrigued but not sure I grasped the meaning fully. At my request, Joey Patrickt kindly composed an explanation that I am pleased to be able to present to you. So here are the words of Joey Patrickt:

Posturban: A term used in the last quarter of the 20th century (especially on the West Coast of the United States) primarily applied to art and culture. And consequentially to everything else since then. Posturban: An attitude of detachment and upper-handedness, eclecticism and ignorance. Living within and without the present situation. Dissolving limits, going outward and inward. Using it all since we’ve seen it all (reproduced in some medium or another), it is the moment, art is always potential in the moment. The moment needs to be isolated. Posturban art is most recognizable by its content: It’s a thinking person’s art. Posturban philosophy permeates each action of the artist by overtones and connections of the past and future. Eclecticism is important in posturban art. It’s a pretend situation. The posturban artist realizes this dilemma; modern art has painted itself into a corner – no more isms.  The posturban artist applauds the apparent conclusion of the modern period. Posturban art claims to be unmodern. Freeing itself from restriction, embarrassment and answers.

The posturban is also a condition; an end result of the industrial revolution. The environment is a given which time and mind wear upon, not to mention human usage. It’s a self-inflicted state of awareness. The images of the posturban artist come from textbooks, encyclopedias, the media (printed material in general). The posturban artist assumes she/he has seen it all. Nothing else can be made that’s new using existing systems. Something like all the avenues of communication are blocked by capitalist debris.

One must know urban, to be posturban. Joey Know
