An Official Announcement will be made around 05.30 CET on Thursday 4 December

Meanwhile...

Dan -- the photo and text are fantastic, fantastically funny, too: Thanks

I expect to be rerferred to as 'Dear Artistic Leader' (or 'SMARP') in the future.

Fleur -- not quite

Nancy & Mim -- you might be on to something there

Rose -- art as part of a 'BOGOF' promotion? (No, I'm not being rude -- it's an acronym for Buy One Get One Free)

Alaisn -- je ne vous understandez pas

As to various guesses that I'm going to become IUOMA's Artist-in-Residence, well, that would be an honour, but I'm a bit big to fit into a mail box. Also, it would be a bit lonely there until the postperson came

Dan, that is fabulous. Val should send that out as his Christmas card this year.

While in the Glorious Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Val will also create many portraits and a double life-size bust of Dennis Rodman.

Pyongyang, North Korea.
As part of his residency, SMARP International Union of Mail-Artist Valentine Mark Herman continues his investigations of cinema, art, and propaganda, this time turning his attention to this North Korean ideology. In the late 1960's Kim Jong II guaranteed his succession as the Dear Leader of North Korea by adapting his father's Juche (pronounced choo-CHAY) philosophy to propaganda, film and art. Translated as self-reliance, Juche is a hybrid of Confucian and authoritarian Stalinist pseudo-socialism. The film is about a South Korean video artist who comes to a North Korean art residency to help bring Juche cinema into the 21st century. Inspired by the real-life story of the South Korean director kidnapped in the 70's to invigorate the North Korean film industry, the film follows Yoon Jung Lee, a young video artist invited to work at a Juche art residency [!!!] on a North Korean collective farm. The story is told through the films she made at the residency as well as interviews with a Bulgarian filmmaker and even a brief sci-fi movie.

Réserve Africaine de Sigean? Collège des Corbières Maritimes? Musée Archeologique [Narbonne]? Pitch n' Putt? The local waste management department [the San Francisco W.M.D. has a great Artist in Residence program, no joke, it's very cool]? Did you give us a clue or are we just throwing out wild guesses? Fontfroide Abbey? Lieu d'Art Contemporain? Collège la Nadière? Musée des Corbières?
