I was excited to get this! I had heard about Zentangle Art but had never seen one. Then PJ said she was sending me one. All I could say when I opened up the envelope was Wow! So much work, so much detail. Thanks PJ!

This is my type of piece...mysterious. Bifidus has written short missives all over this work. Some not quite readable. I love it. The envelope is a first day issue! I used to collect stamps as a kid. Always wanted one of those. On the back of the envelope, his talent for writing shines as he writes what almost reads like a journal entry. A sad one. All in all it is a well thought out beautiful, emotional piece. Thank you Bifidus.…

October 11, 2010 - Hugo Porcaro (Rev. Hugo) sent me this absolutely uplifting piece of mail-art that I can completely appreciate and that - as seems to happen in this mysterious flow of things - couldn't have come at a better time. Rev. Hugo washes it all away with joyous mail-art that reminds me what I'm here for and I am born again. His IOUMA profile says St.…

October 9, 2010 - Discovering Mehrl Bennett's art and visual poetry has been yet another benefit of being a part of the IUOMA. Mehrl (aka Visual Mom) is part of a community of artists and poets that, for me, is a center of vispo in the U.S. This group includes IUOMA members Ficus Strangulensis, Sheila Murphy, Jim Leftwich, Matthew Stolte, and of course John Bennett. There are many… Continue

I received a card from Hugo - a gorgeous caricature drawn/painted onto cardboard. I am seeing blind Hugo - come out the cupboard! But from your signature you are a graphic designer?? Thank you - I will return the favor on Tuesday.

Thursday was a wonderful day. I understood Valentine's message on his page that "An envelope is superior to an email". How true. One can hold an envelope, runs ones fingers where the artist has made conscious decisions to paste, collage and draw visual images. I could own an envelope all the way from France. Words in cyberspace float in their own miasma, giving us no satisfaction of ownership - by his gift, I now own Valentines envelope, a piece of his art. AND MAN!! The curiosity of whether or…

ERni's eagerly awaited mail FINALLY arrived on Thursday. It was very apposite to our discussions on the landing of mail art. Somehow his card make me think that under his suit, the astronaut had carefully chosen his underclothes so that should he be taken by moon residents, they would be overwhelmed by the colors of earth in comparison to the greyness of their planet. They would be so overwhelmed in fact they would let him go in exchange for his glittering undergarments. I looked up ERni's…

With the template of envelope I made yesterday, I started making envelope.
Today I use wrapping paper to make envelope. On the back of the paper, I used Japanese paper tearing off and do collages to make more elaborate, even inside the envelope. I could not do well with folding, so I will be careful next time. I learned that when I paste a… Continue

October 7, 2010 - Karen Champlin sent me a new set of her mail-art assemblages, which I appreciate very much. It just seems to me her work gets better and better. In a previous blog, I discussed at length the relation of her work to vispo. Her use of textual material becomes increasingly more diverse and complex. This piece is the first example of something I've received from her that… Continue

October 5, 2010 - Jon Foster from the southeastern part of the U.S. sent me this very economical or minimalist piece of mail-art that I appreciate very much. The majority of space is distressed blank cardboard. Although, as you can see faintly, there is some - what I take to be - indented store coding of the "found variety." The obscured eyes are… Continue
