 EDMUND AND THE SUBTLE SCHOOL OF HIPPO CEREAL  OBSEQUIOSNESS

April 31, 2014 - Edmund is a talented, energetic Hippo mail-artist currently making a big splash in the puddles of Hamburg. He lends credence to the nearly indisputable evidence accumulating over the past three years that Hippos have become a vital element in the international mail-art world inspiring innovative work from their 'minders'. Edmund, while highly original in his own right, is doing work in the same aesthetic realm as Kunsthound Domingo, Bianca, Trouble, the Senator, and all the wild-life that Erni sees on his daily travels, that we at The 'Edmund for King' Art Foundation, have identified as the "Hamburg School of  Nonsense, Bullshit & Frogshit".  Edmund is, however, less over-worked than his counterparts, and more inclined to have a long siesta after lunch when he is asked to do something -- anything -- with Erni's found materials and post-Akademie strategies. The fantastic work  he is currently involved in is an ingeniously altered cereal box, big enough for him to get his paws in. The panels can be folded to create different variations on the contents, so there is an interactive element between Edmund and his Corn-flakes -- or to put that in plain, simple and non-pretentious English, he opens the box & eats the Corn-flakes. Cerealism, the use of cereal boxes in mail-art, can be traced back to Mr Kellog Corn-Flake, and, of course, Cerealism is also considered a form of  Hippo po (and/or Hippo-poo). We in the Off Scene Akademie Hamburg are thrilled to share this wonderful hippo-info with you and give Edmund a chance for you all (even our one-time follower in Hagen) to share his genius in the Akademie's Archives and Gallery.

Identifying the source of Edmund's love of Corn-Flakes (for example it does bear a resemblance to his former infatuation with Coco Pops) is problematic but hardly necessary. On the cereal packet is an asemic, cryptic quality. Edmund has subtly, but distinctively, overlaid this in the main body of his work to produce a visual-verbal construct, a complex integration of color, image, text, milk, sugar -- as well as the occasional dollop of honey when he has been good -- and indecipherable symbols that work together with, in our estimation, pleasing results without the jarring qualities one finds in the anti-art strain of Hippo-po (and/or Hippo-poo). His work is highlighted by the abundance of sticky paw marks that can be found on the cereal box.

Bonsoir! Not all the streets are this narrow, but mine is 'cos it's a very old one -- built for horses (and carts) but not for cars which, of course, didn't exist in the mid 17th century. I don't do any water sports, but the étang (lake) is very beautiful and for most of the year there are pink flaningoes around -- trying not to get mowed down by halcats and:or windsurfers. Fortunately, for the flamingoes, water-skiing is banned on the étang. Glad you liked the stuffI sent you...it wasn't cerealism alas as edmund is more into that than me. Regards de Val

Why?

I was born & bred in Darlington, England.

Darlington has one of the worst football teams in England. I have supported it for something like 57 years, through good times and bad. There has only been one good time. In 1956, Darlington (then in their usual Division, the very lowest) beat Chelsea (in their usual Division, the highest) in a Cup replay, 4 -1. 2 of the goals were scored by Billy Tulip -- who never played for Darlington again after that match, because he ahd a bad knee (what a wimp). Hence my email name, billytulip1956@yahoo.com

All the rest of the times have been bad, but for reasons that no-one else, including me, can fathom, I still support Darlington FC...except that they gor thrown out of the League 2 or 3 seasons ago and had to be re-born as Darlington (1883). They don't even play in Darlington any more as they lost their bstadium when they went bankrupt -- for the 3rd time in 7 years.

Well, you did ask....

PS. I went to Canada for a year -- & still supported Darlington FC. I returned to England -- & still supported Darlington FC. I went to Denmark -- & still supported Darlington FC. I returned to England -- & still supported Darlington FC. I moved to Holland -- & still supported Darlington FC. AND FOUND MYSELF IN THE LAND OF REAL TULIPS -- BILLIONS OF THEM! I used to go back to Darlington a lot to see my Mum -- & still supported Darlington FC. I  moved to the South of France. I used to go back to Darlington a lot to see my Mum -- & still supported Darlington FC. BUT, tulips do not thrive in the South of France -- it's too warm, & the soil is wrong -- and now I only have Darlington (1883) to support, &, as my Mum is now dead I don't go back to Darlington any more.

Perofrations are done with a 100 year old printer's tool - a cast iron perforator that has a metal "comb" that perforates the paper when you depress a foot peddle.
