ROD in VENICE II

From the 30th September I am back in Venice for a residency and exhibition at the Emily Harvey Foundation. I will spend a part of each day photographing 'The Colours of Venice' and posting them here, I will also make videos of 'Venice in Transit'.

If you haven't had the good fortune to visit the beautiful city then join me here and let me show it to you through the lens of my camera.

I seen a peanut stand

I seen a rubber band

I seen a needle that winked it's eye

But I think I'd seen about everything until I saw Rod Summers photos.

And I did sigh.

Did you ever have one of those days when so much happens that you think to yourself “I’m glad I don’t have a blog where all this has to be reported.”?  Yesterday was nearly one of thoseJ.

I saw a gondolier who was texting as he rowed.

I saw a broken umbrella in a dustbin.

I saw a tour guide who was reading his speech directly from a tour guide book.

I saw a train station in the countryside not far from Venice where all the lights and ticket machines were turned off.  I was really happy when the train to take me back to the island pulled into that darkness and stopped to pick me up, even if it did come in from the opposite direction than the one  I had expected.

I saw a black & white cat that came to say hello and accepted the bit of biscuit I offered it.

I saw the inside of a magnificent villa and met Antonio Sassu and the performance group Gruppo Sinestetico… but you don’t want to know all that, you want to see some photos right?

Sounds like a fine time.  But what is that bear doing in the canal?

Yesterday morning I received an email from a friend in Iceland to tell me that mutual Icelandic friends were in Venice and would like to meet me; Icelanders have been doing the European tour for more than a thousand years;-), so we met at the gallery yesterday evening, came back to the apartment, drank wine in Jürgen’s roof garden in the apartment above this one then went out to dine in our regular café. A splendid evening by anyone’s standard.  Here are 7 photos from yesterday’s quick wander in the close neighbourhood. This evening we are going off island to see a performance by Antonio Sassu’s performance group in a villa in the countryside an hour’s train ride from here.

Lovely photos Rod.  Has that little red hooded figure been seen again down those mysterious alleyways and dripping back streets?

The sun shone but rarely on this day and there was a wind cold enough to have the tourists wearing coats, there were even less tourists on the streets than usual... less but still thousands, when I flew in on Monday there were 5 of these giant cruises ships tied up at the harbour.

The day was spent firstly mounting collages in the gallery and releasing red balloons to float down amongst the crowds that cross beneath the gallery window. Buying vegetables  from the splendid market close to this apartment, talking and walking with Sylvia the secretary of the foundation which has the residency that Jürgen and I are on and which John has next year, buying train tickets to go off the island to see the performance of Gruppo Sintetico with Antonio Sasso on Saturday and late this afternoon walking around the calle close to the apartment looking for light and finding, much to my surprise, that a museum no more than 100 meters from here has an exhibition of audio art. I also made one short video in the transit series today, I'll upload it to YouTube later.
