"Mail Art"...The mail box is used by the Greek postal service to store the day's mail delivery for a local area of about 10 city blocks or so. Then the postman comes by and picks up what he can carry to deliver to the first neighboring area and returns to pick up more as the day goes by, etc.
This particular box is on the corner where the soccer fans pass by on their way to the stadium which is two blocks away. Thus the GRAFFITI!
There really is a "mail box" under all that "art" :-)

Un omaggio alla città di Portogruaro attraverso un progetto di arte postale che pone a tema tre delle parole chiave costituenti le ragioni della sua fondazione, unite dal comune scorrere.
A tribute for the city of Portogruaro through a project involving art through mail. The keywords chosen as the theme are the motif of its foundation, joined in a common flow.

Limite
margine tra terra ed acqua,
tra il porto fluviale e le strade del commercio,
tra i canali e i giardini dei palazzi,
costante riferimento ad un cambio di sistema, materia e colore.
Limit
border between earth and water,
the river harbor and the trade routes,
the channels and the gardens of the palaces,
a constant reference to a change in system, material and colour.

Scambio
non solo di merci ma anche di colori, profumi,
influenze artistiche ed architettoniche,
di reciproca conoscenza,di cultura quindi.
Exchange
not only of goods but also of colours and scents,
artistic and architectural influences,
mutual knowledge, therefore culture.

Segno
condizione di assenso gestuale, conclusione di un accordo,
e contrattazione, una traccia sovrapposta a tante altre
il cui significato è oltre la somma delle parti
Sign
a condition of consent expressed in gesture, the conclusion of an agreement,
a trace superimposed on many others:
whose meaning is beyond the sum of the parts.

I used to work at the post office in my hometown for a while. well, it wasn't as beautiful as shown here, but it stands to reason Post-Office deals with all incoming and outgoing mail-art:) and it's full of art and even magic itself: all those beautiful stamps from all over the world (I naturally became obsessed collecting them and downloading the pictures of them by rapidshare search engine and many others), post cards, even lotteries...no emails can substitute that!

Here are those friendly yellow mail boxes
at the Harilaou Branch of the Greek Post Office
where I send out my mail art all over the world.
ELTA (Remember that the upside-down V is the Greek "L")
EL = Elliniko (Greek...or literally: Hellenic, from Hellas ..careful!)
TA = Taxydromeio (now that's a mouth full..)
taxy = fast, speedy and dromeio = way or road
Ah! The Greek Speed Way? No, no, no. The Greek Post!
Or, as it is on the mailbox: "Hellenic Post".
From me to you :)

Just discovered this place today, and am intrigued by
the nice relationships many have at the post office with mail art.
Not so easy for me in Greece, maybe because it is a rare item
to see: mail art. I have found it easier to just buy a horde of stamps
and guess the weight of my mail art sendings. A few large items were
not well appreciated by the postal clerks :" Oh, can we send THIS, like THAT?". and I must always add "contents: postcards, letter, etc.", so they don't panic and think it is "ART" and will need to open and charge me with smuggling valuable Greek art out of the country. sigh.
Just recently, I played with making faux stamps, and I fear that even though the REAL stamps are in a prominent place, the postal authoities have not sent my mail art out, or at least they have been delayed? I may have to place my faux stamps only on cards INSIDE envelopes. Not a big problem, I guess.

Today I went to the post office to get some stamps and at the same time to post a mail art card.

This is the post office "Neude" in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Some Pictures from inside..

And here you see the postman who stamped my mail. He didn't want his face on the picture, but I can tell you, he was a nice and happy smiling man.

In Venice we were looking for any post office to send tourist cards. We were lucky to find the main one. We were greatly impressed by this magnificent building and the yard:
