Well, given that our Valentine's Day Special Mailing has been such a success, it's perhaps time to think about the next Special Mailing.

The theme for this one has been suggested by Valentin Dolgov, and will commemorate Yuri Gagarin becoming the first man in space on 12 April, 1961.

The Mailing could celebrate any and all space achievements since then, with, of couurse, an emphasis on postal history.

PLEASE JOIN THE MAILING.

I'm willing to coordinate the mailing list again.

So far we have 2 participants (both called Valentin[e], but to be so called is neither a necessary nor sufficient condition to join in) as follows:

1. Valentin Dolgov, PO Box 5308, Tomsk, Russia 634057

2. Valentine Herman, 1 Rue de la Vieille Fontaine, F-11130 Sigean, France

Val...

I am unfamiliar how the 'mailing' works ...Nikki

Hi Nikki! It works like this:

-- people agree to participate in it (say there are 15 involved)

-- and to mail all other partcipants so that they receive something on or around the 12th April

-- you have to mail something to the other 14 (it can be the same something, or different space -themed things: you choose)

-- and the other 14 people mail something to you

We have just done a Valentine's day mailing -- the first of the Group -- and it was a big success in that it generated lots of ideas and interest. You can read all about it under the Valentine's Day Mailing Discussion in the Postal History Boutique.

I HOPE YOU'LL JOIN THE SPACE MAILING!

Regards, Val

Way out in space together,

My heart would be a fireball,
A fireball,
Everytime I gazed into your starry eyes."

Thanks, MyLife...

Over to the 'Rocket Man' himself,  Elton John at Mission Control now:

"Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them if you did
And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man"

Houston confirms that you're on the mailing list.

Ground control to Major Val...I'm in...

Message from Mission Control, Wednesday morning, CET, as the spaceship approaches Sigean, France:

Just to let you know that we have 12 people already in the project: Valentin Dolgov, Diane Keys, Katerina Nikoltsou, Angie and Snooky*, MyLifeAsACollage, Mim Golub Scalin, Laurence roberts, David Stafford, Steve (Tandy), Carla cryptic & Val Herman.

The Control Centre will send you their addresses closer to the mailing/lift-off date.

Regards, Val

* SNOOKY: the key date for you to commemorate should not be 12 April 1961 but 3 November 1957, as that was the date that the first dog -- called Laika -- was lunched into space in the Soviet satellite Sputnik 2. Perhaps you could get the dog Group to organise a commemorative mailing later in the year

Side note: Laika and the Cosmonauts, a Finnish rock group with emphasis on twang produced the definitive interpretation of the Get Carter soundtrack theme. Someday, when I'm very brave or drunk, I will post my interpretive dance of this song on youtube and receive instant viral fame or infamy.
AND someone told me, David, that you had dreams about cycling down a river on a special bicycle...or something equally weird. AND now there's a dance coming our way. The Twangs the Thang, Duane.. Regards, Val
