Even though it makes sense that we can look on each others profiles, you may want to add your address here and any blogs or other accounts you want highlighted. This way it's in a closed environment and we all get to share.

Who will you send  your first piece of mail to? I've been thinking about this a lot. Will it be someone in this group? Will it be one of the many mail artists I've exchanged MA with over the years? Will it be one of my letter writing friends, or my…Continue

Significant dates for the diary (some might say...) 41 Replies

McFloozy mentioned Quack Day in February and I had a message from Valentine Mark Hermann telling me of an anniversary in February. I figured that it would be best to put all the dates in one discussion, so anyone could contribute and we could all…Continue

@sue: i have incredible too!!! but mine's rooted and has a terminal! ;-D

@camel: IMHO, mass marketing gets stuff tested, which improves quality much faster than the old way of doing things. and cheaper parts = cheaper end product. i think all in all you get more for your money even though the parts themselves may be cheaper quality, the overall design gets refined faster.

and also, consumers drive product progress. if people want something built to last fifteen years, there would be a market. but with moore's law of exponentially increasing processor power, who needs it to last three, let alone fifteen!

i buy android because it runs linux. linux has is open source and highly developed. unfortunately they make it difficult to get to the internals. you have to root the phone which voids the warranty. it would be akin to selling laptops with windows not only installed, but not easily removable. it's not a nice business practice. but you can't have everything :P

Andy,

No pressure, but I was wondering how you made out with your search for the royal wedding stamps? Were they sold out or were you able to find some?

Sue Bowen, you are prettylily with those great Poems of knots", yes?

They have texture, we can "feel-the-art", as well as visual, so they are HAPTIC.

Also the strings/knots make a language, a writing all your own, so they are ASEMIC.

Thus, your knotpo (knot poetry) is Asemic Haptic Art! Beautiful pieces!

@camel, Thanks for all of the droid advice & offer.  I have installed the bar code scanner and the task killer.  I don't text or use flicker, so I'm not sure about those aps yet.  It has lots of features I like.  Husband has Incredible,  Have to find my way through a little bit at a time.  No plans to blog with it yet.

@postmuse

not trying to be snarky....

I feel that Apple made a choice to quit producing high quality products for professionals and move into the consumer market.

They made an effort to reduce the quality the we professionals were used to in an effort to produce higher quantities of product at a slightly reduced price.

They then proceeded to make a sub-standard product to create "buzz" (ipod) and get consumers hooked.

The also managed to only drop prices for the cheaper consumer models by a few hundred dollars - increasing profits by 30-45% as shown in the quarterlies starting in 2005.

Even tho thier stock prices did not start rising until 2004, they continued to market to non-professionals and sales of the Ipod skyrocketed spurring the creation of the IMac in 1998 - a cheap consumer product and in my opinion - the first "netbook"

In Oct 2004, Apple had apparently won over the masses sporting a sharp increase in stock value, $43 to $70 in four months (the consumers have spoken) in Feb 2005 the stock split 2:1

It is now 2011 & yesterday Apple stock closed at $348

I used the word consumerism because, I was using Apple products as a professional. They were expensive & worth every penny.

The last model I owned was a G4 Powermac Pro (not the consumer version)

I used a G5 running Quantel Harry for video production.

Quantel has since moved to Linux based machines because Apple can no longer handle the processing power required due to substandard processors & poor cooling element design.

I cannot find a consumer model that can compare in power or quality with what I used professionally.

Think about it honestly - you can now buy an Iphone for $99.00

(A hook in the mouth)

but a substandard computer starts at over $1000.00

I can currently purchase a Windows Machine with 10 x the power & storage starting at around $400

Yes, I know, I said the "W" word and it even sounds like i am promoting "W"

but what i am trying to say here is :

Windows knows their stuff is crap & consumer driven & therefore it is affordable to the masses...

Apple knows their current stuff is crap & is now consumer driven but could give two shits about the masses because:

Apple is Cool & people will pay whatever they ask.

@postmuse: 2000, isn't your internet a bit outdated? ;-D
Comment by PostMuse on May 4, 2011 at 11:38am
Yeah. I know how to use the Internet. I actually helped to write a book about it 10 years ago.  I just don't know how that particular word works in your original statement.

Consumerism is a social and economic order that is based on the systematic creation and fostering of a desire to purchase goods and services in ever greater amounts

By the by ... this week is National Postcard Week in the US. Part of my celebration is pulling ALL the available addresses on my Zmrzlina Postcrossing profile .... so I have 56 cards traveling at the moment (I don't typically have all my cards traveling ... too expensive!). I was thrilled to pieces that three of the 56 Postcrossers are happy to get handmade postcards. I will be sending three of my MailArt365 cards to them.
