Dear Tiziana, here come some ideas about my country, the HeMiSpheres, and about virtual alternative contries in general. Hope you can use it. Greetings HeMi

: "The HeMiSpheres - My Virtual Alternative Country
1 Connection of Structures
I have created the "HeMiSpheres" as my home country in the mail art network. The name contains two words: on the one hand my artist code "HeMi" and on the other hand the word "spheres" with the meaning of: Areas, horizons and spheres of activity. The compound word as a whole therefore stands for HeMi’s spheres of perception and activity: for his cognitions and his interaction as well as his communication, his world knowledge and his world. And at the same time it contains an important symbolic meaning by matching the already existing word "HeMiSpheres". In so far it says that the parts commonly form the ball, the whole.

The HeMiSpheres are a virtual alternative country. Virtual means that they do not exist really, but only as a playful communicative medial artistic concept within my imagination, simulation. As a virtual country, in principle, the HeMiSpheres escape every set of rules. Since they, however, are in an interactive relation to the real social life, they nevertheless are subject to certain social rules. By the word alternative is said that the HeMiSpheres have other structures, behaviours and aims in comparison with real countries. They lack for example the real territory and institutions like government and legal system. But they have a real developed "artistic communication system" which is integrated via mail art into the real society world. It handles in an alternative creative way the artistic strategies, expressions and behaviours, processes and products. A matter of particular interest are its simulated alternative official institutions as well as their media offers, like post offices, stamps, money, seal brands, stamp imprints and country flags. Beyond this kind of integration there have been and are from time to time also other social contacts of the HeMiSpheres, like to the official cultural activities, to the mass media and to the public audience.

The HeMiSpheres are surrounded by a variety of alternative virtual countries of other mail artistes. By their communication system they in a direct way interact commonly with other virtual alternative countries. Some of them combine occasionally. Some countries for instance, inclusive the HeMiSpheres, have combined in a "supranational" organisation, namely in the International Mail Artists Council of Virtual States (I. M. A. C. O. U. S.) resident in Florenville in Belgium. In 1999 the ambassasor of the HeMiSpheres (me) is handed one of the first member documents by the organisation’s President and Vice President.

2 Connection of Functions
The HeMiSpheres orientate themselves at the knowledge of the new paradigm shift. According to it in the end it is imperative that a viable reality is produced always and exclusively in a global social way by interaction and communication, always anew. Only in this way the chance arises that the today increasing interruption of the interactive correlations between sensory wise life and human economic-scientific society can become stopped.

The HeMiSpheres make aesthetic the experiences of one's own, as all artistic alternative virtual countries do. They in a particular way make perceptible their experiences and their open meanings through visual conception in the sphere of the senses. Experiences are interpreted by media offers as processes and products. Structures, behaviours and aims of existing real countries and institutions are analysed. Special attention is given to the institutionalized large industrial networks of traffic and transmission, as through them all free communication and interaction is operated. To them belong the traffic networks of the post, on the rail, in the air and in the Internet. In a particular critical way are examined anti-life facts which damage the living together of the people, and of their living together with nature. Interventions in the communication’s liberty are included. Criticism even then is practised, if the media offers have a sovereign character and are protected from interventions by partly specific official punishing threats. It also is considered an abuse of the free social process of communication, for example, if there is a too broad gap between the values propagated by the media offers and the actual practice of the protagonist or if life hostility is expressed immediately, for example if the warlike is glorified by the media.

3 Grave Jokes
In the end also at the artistic game with virtual alternative countries there is at stake the age-old human dynamic task of unity in variety, i. e. to provide in tendency a worldwide, area transgressing as well as holistic orientation and design of the liberty and openness of the world views. In the light of the real countries’ catastrophes productions the artist and mail artist is forced with his work into the public sphere as well as discourse and to deal with both. It is also shown exemplarily by playful creative dealing with alternative virtual countries, how one can contribute to the construction of life-serving realities through a free, democratic, playful creative discourse, and to be more precise in particular also by media offers resembling those of the real countries, but that are alternative to them. The play causes the world to move closer together in the artistic area and beyond that forming a cosmopolitan neighbourhood. The game with the "HeMiSpheres" in the end follows the motto which is provided by their name: to express the different what the people and thus their realities are too, and how they and their realities as others are whole.
The game of the mail artistes with their virtual alternative countries and their media offers is a significant expression of the new paradigm shift leading to a new feeling and thinking according to the motto: „Think and feel anew. Think and feel: if then!" The invention of the virtual countries by the mail artistes and their communicative medial use are the result of an intellectual play instinct as already Johann Wolfgang von Goethe has indicated in his formula of the "very grave jokes".

Tiziana, Here's the only remaining written account of the history of Arnoldia. It seems that lack of funds in the State Treasury have curtailed required upkeep at the Bureau of Records allowing the resident mice to eat most of the historical documents.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ARNOLDIA
Arnoldia is a small pauperapality surrounded on three sides by a benign but unenlightened community of toilers and carriers. Purposeful folk, they go about their daily labors oblivious to the beauty that surrounds them.

South of Arnoldia is another small independent state , Pondidia, lovingly governed by Her Grace, the Dak de Droll who’s enlightened and benevolent presence makes life in Pondidia splendidly happy. Pondidia and Arnoldia coexist peacefully, with only the occasional grumble, while the surrounding folk bicker and squabble over the merest misalignment of purpose or word.

Arnoldia wasn’t always poor. Before seceding from the surrounding borough, Arnoldians, and especially their Prince Arno the Second, were a wealthy and prosperous people. However, due to a lack of careful planning, Prince Arno declared his boundaries and severed ties without considering that the only available bank was beyond his new borders. Feeling slighted, the bankers confiscated his substantial assets and declined to talk to him regarding reopening commercial ties. Further, they gleefully usurped the assets of all Arnoldians declaring them “persons-of-no-account.” So, left with little monetary resources, Arnoldians were forced to live frugally trading their arts and crafts for comestibles and other necessities.

Since that time many years ago, Arnoldia’s citizens have come to accept their lot as poor but happy artists. Prince Arno’s blunder, as it is now called, has reached the status of legend in the small community and is passed on from parent to child in bedtime stories and as reward for good deeds and accomplishment at lessons.
