Nancy Bell Scott's Bits

Christmas arrived early this week in the form of a brown paper package not tied up with string but it certainly contained a few of Nancy Bell Scott’s favorite things. 38 of them, in fact. All carefully annotated and laid out like specimens from a Library of Congress collection. There are bits of string, rust, a rock from Mexico and Nancy’s drugs of choice: Baking Soda, Laxatives and Alka Seltzer (life in Old Orchard Beach is no picnic or if it is you can bet there’s a lot of Fried Chicken and potato salad). Scientists who have explored Nancy’s past lives have found, along with the usual pharoah’s concubines, Bridey Murphy and the Oracle of Old Orchard Beach, several museum curators and archivists of the arcane. Nancy’s Bit collection is proof of some seepage of those past lives into her current incarnation. The tableau is laid out with consummate care and each item is given a line or two in the accompanying list to prove its worthiness which is well worth reading if you can switch back and forth between the pictures to see where you are. One thing I sorta missed is a few raindrops on roses but they may have evaporated en route. Thank you, Nancy.

 The Collection in All Its Magnificence. I particularly like the clothes pin eating the twig.

All in all a tour de force which sets the phonograph needle of the mind down on a scratchy old recording of Julie Andrews adding her two bits.

Yah, who even knew there was such a thing as a glass dump, never mind a glass dump driver? It was a lucky day when she drove up to my shop in her station wagon on her way to a new place to live and sold me her collection. Among the tons of smaller glass bits were also bottoms and necks of bottles, warped by heat, and some neat pottery shards. Might have to post more pictures of some. Your appreciation of Maine warms my heart, Nadine!

Finally catching up (or down) with blogs of the past month. Thanks for your great blog and photos, Dav.id. As I think you know, the second the idea erupted you became the recipient in my mind. Why I made such an orderly piece and you were the recipient will always be questionable, as we are both disorderly.
