Received MA - Karen Champlin (Illinois)

Dark, cryptical and scary. Just the way I like it. KC continues to create the most evocative and personal art with blood and memory intertwined. String has figured in a number of my most recent acqusitions.

What is the uiverse…

A suggested means of Binding Mail Art Books

Sending chapters of a book through the mail means that recipients have to work out how to keep the jolly things together! Here's a suggestion. It involves adding a hinge to received pages that will enable you to glue the hinges together, thereby binding the pages together - let me show you what I mean: (Sorry De Villo - but yours is the one I'm busy with - hope you dont mind!

: Cut a hinge the same length as the gutter of the book

: Fold and nest into pages…

A Blog Post for Herr Erni - his Contribution to The Crimson Giant.

I received Erni's contribution to The Crimson Giant in my surprise package on Friday. It is really stunning Choctea. I know you do all sorts of other stuff, but the work you send me is, well, its my own personal aesthetic satisfied. A while ago when you first posted this SECOND contribution to the Crimson Giant on IUOMA - because your first was too big for the book - you uploaded photos of this work AND you said "Ok? No words. Everybody thinks what she or he likes" So does that mean one gets… Continue

Received: Snooky's Halloween (Part II) mail-art (Port Washington, Wisconsin, USA)

October 31, 2010 - I saved what I think is the best piece of Snooky's Halloween mail-art for the day and evening of the occasion. Really nice holiday mail-art with the added bonus of Karen Champlinesque vispo included.
Great news that Snooky let us have a peak at his costume;…

The Crimson Giant and the Tower of Babel - De Villo Sloan

It's a story. And it's got (quite large) holes.

Sloan has comprehensively explained the "whyness" of this piece on Cheryl's blog, and as usual it was a very interesting read.

I know he is not happy with what he sent for the Giant and probably frustrated about it, but I think that it has actually been received very well by the people who got it, as far as I know. I find it very unique, a perfect… Continue

A dog that wags its tail... (coffee etegami) - from Deborah Davidson

"A dog that wags its tail doesn't get beaten" (I find japanese proverbs to be rather spot on).

Some people are so talented it's not even funny. Deborah draw this etegami with coffee, and it couldn't look more professional. I wish I had such skills... sigh...

And I NEED to find those ultra-cute Hello Kitty stamps!

thanks… Continue

The Crimson Giant and the Tower of Babel - Bifidus Jones

Cheryl's Giant being stuck somewhere between South Africa and Japan, this is the first page of the book that made it to my mail box. It must have been a very bumpy ride, because the envelope was badly torn apart (and not by a chocolate addict fluxus dog). With apologies from US postal service. That's too bad, I really liked the newspaper envelope, Bifidus.

This is great work as usual, I… Continue

Received from Lauriana Glenny, South Africa

In addition to enjoying the overall composition of this piece, I like looking at the sheer number of techniques and artifacts used to create this mail art. From the playing cards to the staples, this piece is wonderful. Thank you, Lauriana!

Binding Ties (dismembered World) - from Cheryl Penn

I was so eager to see what was inside the envelope that I slaughtered it, sorry Cheryl. I think I'll ask for a letter opener for Christmas.

:-o

Each of Cheryl's art books is a world in which I could get lost for hours. Even when dismembered (what she did with The World is a Town art book) there is still an abundance… Continue

Received: Music into mail-art from Austin Wills James (Dallas, Texas, USA)

October 27, 2010 - Most IUOMA members who check the photo galleries and blogs have seen Austin Wills James' distinctive mail-art. Last week, I received this regular post-card size piece that I appreciate greatly. Much of his work that I've seen achieves various expressive and tonal qualities using an overriding base in - I think - watercolor. The address side provides more context for… Continue
