Mail-Artist since:
1957-1977 (didn't know it was mail art); 2009 (now I know)

Why I am involved in Mail-Art:
Like all of us, I suspect, I first did mail art as a child--flowers on cards for grandma, secret codes on letters to girlfriends. Unwittingly, too, I made primitive dadaist collage on packages.

Now I'm in my sixties. I work each day in hope for "the genius," as baudelaire said, to "recover that childhood at will, a childhood brighter now--gifted for self-expression with the tools of adulthood."

Mail art originates in Dada: this thrills me.

Mail art is performance art: this ignites me.

If you want to check out my current art, the best bet is my ipernity website.

My opening venture in mail art was in 2009, with the wrappers & boxes I used to send books to people in a book-swapping club--paperbackswap.com (hardbacks, too; over a million titles available, last time I checked). Those folks mostly didn't know what mail art was & certainly didn't expect to get anything more than the book they requested from me. So it was great fun--it was like tossing art into the wind. I mailed off 220 artworks on packages before I made any scans. The photos here at IUOMA are are few of those old pieces.

Then I started making 6" x 9" collage postcards--did almost nothing but that for some 8-9 years--most of which went immediately in the mail. These days I'm still making & sending pcs, but my big thing, since 2018, is 11" x 17" collages--usually just cut paper, but sometimes with a little bit of paint or other media.

I love getting new mail art correspondents, but I haven't been on this site in a while, so I'm out of touch. =sad face= Send me something, and I will definitely send you something back! And I'll come back soon to look for new mail art pals.
