You are right, I'd never noticed the balancing because I was so entranced with the idea of the lady reading a bedtime story to the birds.  The lady's headpiece and the highlights on the two birds are all little golden crescents, sort of tumbling downward.

What's special about this one (for me) is the counterbalance of the heads, and yellow colouring,of the Japanese lady and the exotic bird on the branch.
