Deal! I''ll settle for a bespoke stick in,lieu of royalties!

No, they are not on Amazon. Perhaps 'vanity publishing' is a better description than 'self publishing'. I typically had 50 - 75 copies printed by a commercial publisher which I distributed to friends & family. It became too expensive for me to continue at the rate of 3-4 books/year, so I turned to (Mail) Art instead.

If you like, you can be my Agent, and get a %age of whatever you/we sell?

Comment by Petrolpetal on April 27, 2014 at 4:34pm

My Word!! When you say self published ...are they on amazon? I know how to self publish through there if you are interested...its easy and free and you really should if you haven't...but I'll stop messing up your vinyl art thread now! I'll do some vinyl art this weekend - promise! In the meantime I'll look at your website!

Erni, I don't think that George was familiar with topless beach ball -- if he had been, he might have had different views about not only war and sport, but also women.

My Vinyl collection does not, in the main, have sleeve covers with photos on them: they didn't exist when I started buying Vinyl (circa 1957). I'm sure I have a Tom Dooley record from the early years somewhere in my collection.

Oranje Boven, Heleen!

If I had a Victor Sylvester I would make Vinyl Art out of it immediately.

And never, ever, let it near a turntable.

You don't have to cut Vinyl into pieces -- paint it, collage it, use the sleeve/cover, etc.

And YES, the smile does remind me of someone....in Hamburg, perhaps?

Blimey Petrolpetal, you do ask a lot of questions!

(I will ask you one at the end of this.)

What are my books (nb plural) about? This is taken from my fantastic web-site www.val-herman-art.eu

"My most recent publications are:

  • Journey Around my Study (2003), an auto-biography.
  • My Sporting Career (2008), another autobiography, describing 26 different sports I have participated in over the years, with limited success, but much pleasure.
  • 99 Doors (2008), a photographic essay and exploration of all kinds of doors (including The Doors, Diana Dors, the Bedford Dormobile, Dawes bikes, Tandoor ovens, Dorian Gray, etc.)
  • 107 Days: The Planned Deconstruction of the Life of Tommy Moran (2008), a novel with gothic, romantic and existential themes.
  • Dear Josephine, Love Valentine (2008), another novel based on a series of old and new postcards.
  • The Shopping List (2009), yet another novel - co-authored with Jessica Wilkin - a sort-of mixed-up romantic novel that starts in a supermarket trolley and ends....
  • Collections ... and Collectors (2009), essays on their personal collections and collecting habits by Valentine M. Herman and Friends.
  • Portrait of the Old Man as an Artist (2009), a slim but elegant book showcasing my water colour paintings.
  • AD 2059: My Life in a Cardboard Box (2009), a series of essays by Valentine M Herman and Friends describing which of our most treasured possessions we would place in a cardboard box to be opened up in 50 years time.
  • Le Must de Herman Mini Museum Catalogue and Guide (2010), a description of the exhibits in the Old Fountain Conceptual Artist and Writing Syndicate's Permanent Installation.
  • Dicing With Death (2010), a photographic essay on dice and the numbers zero to five.

In 2011, I prepared three further works:

  • Repetitions, a series of collages in which the same or similar pictures, photos, drawings, etc are repeated in different ways to demonstrate the visual dynamics and effects of repetitive imagery
  • Exhibition Catalogue ‘Une Enveloppe Par Jour/An Envelope a Day’ for my Exhibition that was recently held in Sigean. (See the ‘Exhibitions 2011’ part of this web-site.)
  • In 2012 I prepared a third work, an Inventory of Sea Monsters and Items of Driftwood Art (and related material).

Unfortunately, I cannot afford to publish these at the moment, so they remain as manuscripts in my Permanent Installation (aka Study)."

(They were all self-published.)

And now my question for you:

When are you going to post some photos of YOUR Vinyl Art, Petrolpetal?

(After all, this is supposed to be about Vinyl Art --or am I mistaken? -- not about my rambling stories)

Today we celebrated 'Koningsdag' (King's Day, the very first: until last year there was Queen's Day). Apart from the fact that our country turns orange for one day, there is also the tradition of the 'Vrijmarkt' (Free market): people are allowed to sell things from their home/garage/ceiling etc., or self-made things like this seller did:

And I searched for, of course, Vinyl. It took a lot of time - most sound-bearers nowadays are [the word that Val doesn't allow me to say here].

But finally I found some!

Like this one (in the background on top you see our King):

YES, there's Vinyl inside! (This smile reminds us of someone?!)

I found this letterbox:

Nice picture: letterboxes and more Vinyl:

But alas.. none of them fits...

As vinyl is holy to me, it will take some time to make it postable - as there is a LARGE threshold for me to cut these into pieces.
So please give me some more time.
To be continued in at least a week.

Thats a great epiphany! and what a happy ever after ending. I am extremely glad those nubiles chose to play their sport near you at the exact time you needed them!...and you are not only an artist but an exhibiting artist.  Now...my next question...whats your book about?

                                 Val 's Beach Ball Epiphany

                                   Requested by Petrolpetal

Be warned, this might cause offense

I was made redundant.

It came as a big surprise to me.

I moved to the South of France (from the South of Holland).

I got depressed, very depressed.

"No-one wants me any more; I've no meetings to go to; there's no committees to chair; no reports to write; no office; no personal assistant; no corporate credit card; no company car; nothing."*

One afternoon I was sunbathing at the local beach feeling really, really depressed.

"No one  wants me any more; there's no meetings to go to..."

Alright, Val, we get the picture: get on with the story.

There was noise and activity going on behind me, but I didn't look around at first.

When I finally did, I saw 4 very nubile young women playing topless beach ball.

Being interested in sports, I of course watched them play topless beach ball.

I thought to myself, "Who wants to go to meetings? Who wants to write reports? Who wants to get stuck at Frankfurt Airport on a Friday night? Who wants to struggle to make any sense at all of some meaningless EU document? Who wants to be stuck in an office? etc. Instead of all of that, I can lie in the sun and watch a game of topless beach ball unfold before my very eyes."

Then I decided to enjoy my mid-life crisis** and my retirement**.

                                The End

* I did get a not inconsiderable pay-off.

** I deny that it was a mid-life crisis, but people tell me that it was, because I got divorced; hitched up with a French lady 15 years younger than me (not a normally topless one, I should add); and bought a bright red Porsche

*** I wasn't completely retired, as I became, in order, an environmental consultant, a Visiting Professor at a number of Universities, an author, a Mail Artist, and where I am now, I suppose, an artist.

Please expand on the beach volley ball epiphany
