I frequent thrift stores looking for frames and canvases that I can re-use. I find something sad and intriguing about the handmade art that finds its' way into the donation piles. As an offshoot of the amazing Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) http://www.museumofbadart.org/
I am hoping we can assemble a unique collection of the ugliest reject art out there. This can be one you find, something you have made, bad industrial art for the masses, or mail art flunks. There is beauty in imperfection.

You're right Karen-permission to fail silences the inner critic
I find making bad art to be very freeing. MOBA is a fantastic idea!
It's really great looking Rebecca> it sounds like you are building bricks for a sustainable living commune. Sign me up. DeVillo's automatic writing helped me with my cryogenic rhinoceros horn laminator prototype. It only comes to him while on hayrides, combine driving, embalming, and hangliding. I think he is due for some Fall festivities at the end of the month.
Angie, that's funny. I guess 'bad' is definately subjective . I know I've created quite a few things that are heinous. I like to think that I've destroyed all evidence of it though.
Are you sure you have it the right way up. I could swear it is a dog. Look at that doe eye. I am not a fan of that chrome yellow colour. pretty dire. GESSO.
It's wattle and daub, like what's inside the walls of my house - let me tell you I know... I've repaired enough of it. Anyway, I cut the wattle (hazel rods) from our hazel tree and inserted them into a thrift store frame that had nothing inside it. Next I got some clay that we dug out of the ground and mixed it with straw. Next I am going to lime plaster one side and I have no idea what I'll do next but if De Villo would get that automatic writing stuff in the public domain I might be able figure it out. Ha ha.
I think that sounds fantastic Rebecca. I always think of all the handmade art I see in thrift stores that were probably given as a gift. And then to think the person just gave it away with a pile of sweaters to be sold for 1.99. Did the frame come with that art inside or is that yours?it's cool--looks like striated muscle
I'm collecting frames now too for a hair-brain scheme I am finally executing. I feel bad about the stuff someone else must have loved that I have no use for... Perfect.
At first i wondered about ugly self portraits. I took THE ugliest one this morning when I was making a monotype on a mirror. The angle was shocking. I've never thought of myself as vain but this was repulsive - I couldn't help taking a photo, though and sent it by skype to my husband who is in Mozambique doing serious things. He assures me I don't look like that ever... I think ugly self-portraits would be a step too far.
