Marcia, I'm very unsophisticated about binding. The one just made for Diane, I put my pages together, stuck an ice pick through the pile in two places along the middle, tied a string through both, then folded in half to make it a book. It held fine. Lately also have been using safety pins for very thin booklets. It's fun to explore different ways to go about it.

oh yeah Nancy (Drew) I'm thrilled that your husband liked my trashbook except now you're just encouraging me to make more and neglect other more mundane life issues. tell him congrats on the A+. I don't even know him and I'm proud of him:)

Hi Marcia,

I just machine stitch the binding I'm sure others have more sophisticated methods than I do. Nancy, the more trashbooks the better   

Erni,thos bugs are creepy reminds me of the summer we were invaded by Japanese Beetles.

How do y'all make the trashbooks? I have just got some linen thread & needles. I was going to put my asemic book together with coptic binding if I can get the hang of it. Any other suggestions?

They are HUGELY fun to make, Diane--it's tempting to make them all day. So far that's my only one, but there are more in there. I'm trying NOT to copy you, and hope it doesn't get annoying if others use your idea! But we all have our own style, yes? And that shows up in trashbooks just as in other ways, I hope.

My husband picked up your trashbook the other day--and believe me he's not a trashy guy in terms of amount, haha--and he LOVED it, looked at each and every page and was fascinated. Thought you should know, because it was a high compliment.

Ok, I've got to sort trash today and make room in the studio! Erni's trash is covering quite a bit of acreage! I will post some photos here today of all trash received yesterday, and then blog each (am behind on blogging, it may take a week or so).

ok, I will say Erni, I envy you for living in Hamburg. My own city is so fastidious when it comes to walls. Graffiti or stickers are relegated to the category of "gang activity". Yeah, gangs of artists.

 

Diane you have a good eye. I took a 1-day class from Michael de Meng about 5 years ago. He was so generous with his instruction and I learned a lot about mixing paint colors and sticking stuff together. I guess his influence lingers more strongly than I realized.

Hi Nancy=cool that you got both of our trash donation on the same day and you have that wonderful cigar box to hold it all in. I know what you mean about sending it all out because I can't part with many of the cool lists you gave me. I'm fascinated by the ones in which you appear to be creating crossword puzzles or linguistically mapping words. As for the envelopes, I dye them unfolded and stitch, then glue back together. One year I made fabric christmas cards with fabric envelopes. I had to use stiffener for the fabric, and iron, and hand stitch them closed. Can't wait to get your trashbook they are so fun to make aren't they?

I remember this photo well, Erni, from a week or two ago? The wall actually caught my eye first, it's so trashpo and beautiful.

Trashpopeople, I love you. You've overwhelmed me today with trash beyond trashiness. Erni even sorted his by urban or domestic. Say you envy him for living in Hamburg, Germany, and you will receive Hamburg in bits & pieces. And he was not stingy!

I watched through the window as our grumpy postman delivered this stuff, and he didn't look pleased when he realized that a marked "domestic garbage" package, which ended up not fitting into our mailbox, had to be trekked to the stairway to sit next to others he'd already delivered back there. By the way, there is some prize trash here--e.g., the cigar boxes I "won" by making up a reason why I should have them when no one else applied, a squeezed-empty tube of medicinal ointment, wonderful-smelling teabags, and colorful posters ripped off the streets of Hamburg.  As you all probably know, Erni signs all of his work, including empty medicinal ointment tubes. I especially appreciated "FEED ART TO THE WORLD," one of many notes on his envelopes.

There is also a beautiful envelope packed with Diane trash, and it's fabulous. Diane sent an amazing assortment of the stuff of daily life, with obvious aesthetics inherent plus aesthetic potential. It may be hard to send some of this away in mail art, although the pain is lessened by her sewing onto the back of the envelope a great piece of marked vellum received from Angie recently so that I surely get to keep it (since my own Angie vellum will disappear all too soon). But Diane, what I really want to know is, how did you machine-stitch vellum onto the back of an envelope without including the front??? I'm stupid this way, humor me.

Erni, i have yet to deal with you but certainly will reciprocate, and Diane, the postman took with him this afternoon my very first trashbook, put together over the weekend and needless to say made for you, our trashpo chief and queen.
