I was born in the last year of the golden rabbit (5 cycles ago) so this will be my second.  In honor of that, and because I love rabbit-themed art, I am hosting a year-long Year of the Golden Rabbit mail art call.

I haven't investigated yet but your thoughts seem quite plausible. One thing is certain, it is an allegory of some sort, I was looking on the religious side.

I think the guy on the left is a woman, and I am more and more intrigued. There is obviously something quite dramatic going on but the people on the right and those at the back are in another planet. Thank you Angie and Snooky, now I got a lead to follow, Wikipedia here I come...

Yes that's what I read but forgot to make a note of.  The birds are all European.  I don't read it as frightened it looks more like surprised.

I got the feeling that it may be a tapestry rather than a painting, mostly I would like to know the story, why are so many people and animals frightened? but some not?
