A THOUSAND PEACE CRANES FOR THE PEOPLE OF JAPAN

The images from Japan in March were difficult to watch as a massive earthquake and tsunami swept across the island.  Thousands were killed, whole towns vanished, and the survivors were left with rubble that will take years (if ever) to rebuild.

Looking for a way to reach out to the Japanese people, a local couple began an effort they called the “Peace Crane Project” through an international arts organization.  liketelevisionsnow of Tamworth began by asking members of the International Union of Mail Artists to help make one thousand origami paper cranes.  At the Hiroshima Memorial Peace Museum, there is a children's peace monument area where they hang the loops of cranes which are received from all over the world.  The goal of the project is to send one thousand cranes to the museum for the well-being of the Japanese people.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, from 11am-1pm, the community will be able to join this effort at Cook Memorial Library in Tamworth.  Children and adults of all ages are invited to come and learn how to make origami cranes and help string them together.  All materials will be provided.

The idea is based on an ancient Japanese legend that promises anyone who folds a thousand origami paper cranes will be granted a wish by a crane, such as long life, healing, or recovery from injury and illness.  In Japan, it is commonly said that folding and stringing a thousand paper cranes makes a person’s wish come true.

“Our hope is that the cranes offer a message of healing for the Japanese people as they struggle to recover their lives and land,” liketelevisionsnow said.  The crane in Japan is one of the most mystical or holy creatures and is said to live for a thousand years.

Since the project began, hundreds of paper cranes have arrived in Tamworth from many countries in Europe and South America, as well as from around the United States.  They came in every size and are made from different types of paper, including paper from Japan, Greek magazines, and Skittles wrappers, to name a few.

Just a quick update - my local library has agreed to a program that will have children in my town getting together to make peace cranes. They will also help in stringing them together in the way the Hiroshima Peace Museum requests.

This will happen sometime in September, so please continue to send peace cranes as the project will be coming to a close in the next few months. As of today, we have more than 400 peace cranes. I know 600 sounds like a formidable task, but I'm sure we can do it in the next few months!

If you know people who aren't a part of the group but would like to make paper cranes, please encourage them to do so, and you can send them on to me.

I've been remiss in posting photos of cranes and collages that have been sent to me. I promise I will post them as soon as I'm able.

You can make Peace Cranes from any type of paper.  Here's an example: 26 peace cranes from Katerina today... she simply used ordinary newsprint from papers and magazines.  They're beautiful!

Beautiful and intricate Peace Crane collage ... the folded peace crane is glued to the inside of the mailing envelope.  The artist, Gilles Le Corre, created a cutout window in the envelope, it has a plastic viewscreen!  Also included on the envelope, front and back, are numerous handmade stamps.

I am new here. I love making paper cranes and have been folding them out of everything since I was a kid. I would love to send some, but where do I send them to? Is there a place with more information about this project somewhere?
