I just reorganized my artspace to make more room for more works in progress. 1 Reply

I work on many pieces simultaneously - not just mail art: paper, mixed media, collage, panels- and I had run out of space to place incomplete work as it dries. So I built a storage rack with many shelves, shown here in the back corner. Now my…Continue

You and me both Rebecca, I can't finish a cleaning job without starting or finishing a piece in the middle of it!! I'll find a stencil that's been lost under a pile of crap and think, "That's perfect for this section of that painting" and off I'll go with my spray cans and paints and brushes to come back later to a bigger mess where I can't find anything anymore vowing to never leave anything half tidied ever again. Ha ha! Cleaning up is overrated. Not doing it anymore.

Have been loving reading all these posts.  Reading has been both a distraction technique and a source of vicarious pleasure as I have had the painful task of cleaning up my studio so that my almost 18 year old can have 60 teenagers in it for a birthday party. I am trying not to begrudge her my space but not only do I hate cleaning and see it as a total waste I also get swept away in an idea and find I have trashed a surface in a matter of minutes and have to begin again.

If you look carefully in the right corner you will see a 'trashed surface'.  I got sidetracked working on an altered book for about three lost hours.  This is after I started cleaning up again. We did paint some panels to cover up my untidy shelves which I think was a good compromise. The other thing I have to say is that I have a cardboard addiction. I make 'journals' and altered book journals with kids in schools and I hoard the stuff. While sorting cardboard today I was listening to the radio and they wer talking about spring cleaning.  I find spring cleaning cardboard really problematic. This stash is after cutting 48 22 x 11 inch books for an upcoming project - all the big stuff is gone!

Am in awe of record keeping systems.  I have tried.  I have made books and have managed to keep up with my mailart 365 stuff I've sent but I fail miserably and am still reliant on juggling names and mail in my head.  You are inspiring me!

Glad to share my book with you guys. What you see below is the tally for the year. Although I keep decent records on how much I send, I don't keep records for when I send or when I receive things. On the right side of the picture you'll see addresses for people that I just sent things to out of the blue. When they send something back adn seem like they're willing to continue a trade, I will put a little sticker by their name

Below is a more detailed entry, this one for Mr. Herman in France. I chose him because I thought he wouldn't mind being singled out, just a little bit. Somtimes I send "odd" things and that gets a mark. By my tally, I've sent Mark 36 things to his 35. The only reason for the inbalance is that I just sent him something today. Often the things corss each other in the mail. Hope this clarifies things, a little. Working on a video right now!

The notebooks, oh yes--thanks Jon and Alicia, don't most of us love this stuff?  (and yes, Jon, um, the video ...)   Here is my IUOMA notebook.  SENT is on the left side of the left page, RECEIVED is on the right side of right page, and in the middle are notes, quotes, lists, thoughts, reminders, etc.:

jon foster, could  post a photo of the inside of your record book. curious to see how you set it up. I use the same book but still working on what works and what doesn't. Curious how other members keep track of who, what and when. My log would be an auditors nightmare ;--)

@ Angie - I'm a really big thrift store guy, flea market, any sort of junk shop sort of person. I found that mug on one of my first "junk runs" and I've kept it.

@ Nancy Bell Scott - I really am organized, its the only thing that keeps me sane as a teacher is my ability to organize tasks into patterns. I'm still need to complete my video of all my mail-art stuff, I really need to..have to!

Jill, what a great quote, I love it, and am still laughing.

You are incredibly organized, Jon, very impressive. Not many of us have shown where/how we keep received mail art, and that might be a good trend you've set. (Although far from perfectly organized, my received m.a. is in a good and much more protected space than my work materials.)

The plastic containers have all of the mail art I've reveived.

Below is where I keep all of my old magazines and such.

This is the table where I make all of my things.

The book contains my IUOMA records.
