An artistamp (a portmanteau of the words "artist" and "stamp") or artist's stamp refers to a postage stamp-like artform. It is similar to a Cinderella stamp in that it is not valid for postage, but it differs from a forgery or a bogus stamp in that (typically) the creator has no intent to fool any post office or collector of stamps. (However, depending on how the stamp is used, it may be difficult to distinguish artistamps from local post stamps.) The artistamp is intended to be a miniature artwork which can depict or commemorate any subject its creator chooses.

A while back, some wonderful artist sent me a little package of 4 artistamps. I failed to keep track of the artist who sent them, and I'd really like to know. They have the word "Triangle" on them and one says "30 Years of using my swallow rubberstamp" -- they're really well done.

Thanks Jan! They are all hand stamped. I brayered the watered down red sumi ink as background last night and then this afternoon I got the black sumi ink out and hand stamped the sheet.

Wow, William, truly great set! So you hand-stamped these individually, or did a sheet then copied it?

I think as long as it's not obviously trying to be used to as legal postage there's not an issue. I'm pretty sure this issue is discussed in John Held Jr.'s book on artistamps, but I can't recall exactly what was said in it. I know there have been artists who have sent work via the mail with only artistamps to see if the post office would notice.

Hmmmm, William M, I guess what I was driving toward was a legal definition of counterfeit stamp so's I c'd avoid lawbreaking while committing japery.

I imagine that illegal stamps would be those which were created in an attempt to avoid paying to use the postal system. -- or -- perhaps one w'd actually be required to try to pass them off as postage to be breaking the law.

Y'r ol' Bud,

My first attempt at artistamps using rubber(or eraser as the case is here) stamps.

Fike, seems that counterfeit would imply that the stamp is trying to pass itself off as a stamp that already exists.  Artistamps seem to be less about imitation and more about pushing the envelope or just play.
