hello clif,
your question is a good one... we should always re-think our actions. with respect to nature, ressources and socio-political circumstances it is always a gift, to re-questioning habits.
if you send digital artworks via digital communication you do something else. first of all it is a 1:n relacion and not 1:1 in case of snail mail art. second a digital representation of the art work is not the same in handling. i di not need any energy nor devices to show your physical artwork in a meeting far from home to a friend. in case of your digital copy i would need to carry my laptop. i would need energy and software to show it.
in these days people talk a lot about sustainibility. under normal circumstances paper survive about 270 years, maybe combined artworks like collage with clue 100 years. could you show me any email you have written 40 years ago (i wrote my first and i can not show you one!).
i think the digital world and the analog world are fine. each has its values. if you see all this digital representations of physical artworks on iuoma you could realize that the digital copy enables us to enjoy the communication in the group of likeminded people. this si part of a social satisfaction, and this is an emotion in a moment.
even we use sometimes email to prepare for projects in the physical world of mail art. so we use tools according to their features. long term sustainable duration of the physical representation of an art work is a key feature of ordinary mail art.
when internet is moving from people to "tings" it becomes more and more a feature of inter-machine-communication. new generations will focus on other ways of communication, and they will not understand old people talking about emails. but they might be able to discover a collection of collages on the desk of their ancestors. and there wonder what it was.
Yes, I find a correlation to travel experiences. Your mode of travel will determine what sort of experiences you CAN have by it's default. Traveling on foot means that you're able to speak to others who are on public transport. Riding a bike will put you in touch with those who also ride bikes because bikes don't have enclosures. Traveling in a group will bring you closer to the other members of your group, but isolate you from those who are located where you're visiting. Using an introductory system such as SERVAS or CouchSurfing puts you in other people's living rooms for a couple of nights - it's all in the means you use for your travel experiences.
We need more words for "friendship." "Meeting" people online - why is there no word for "online friendships'?
There's not even a word for the sort of friends you make because you have a hobby or interest in common such as we are doing here! Maybe we could make up a descriptive word for it?
sadly i stumbled of your reply so late, but lets activate the power of your thoughts right now francis. < quote > Maybe we could make up a descriptive word for it? < end quote> that would be a very good contemporary task for contemporary art. i will set up a little database and we could define these new useful words, what do you think?
