RECEIVED: More Great Texas Mail-Art by Austin Wills James (Dallas, Texas, USA)

Mail-art by IUOMA member Austin Wills James (Dallas, Texas, USA)

April 19, 2011 - This recent piece from Austin Wills James (one of two received) seems to be a departure from his music-inspired pieces. He also does interesting work with op-art influenced images. The scan doesn't adequately show the depth-of-field effect that makes this very powerful in person. That's an antiquarian print he's using isn't it? Somebody might know. The reverse side is equally interesting:

Mr. Krinkle? Not sure about that. This mail-art is sealed in plastic or laminated. That seems like a very good idea, but I don't see much of it. Austin enjoys the music of The Grateful Dead. He and I recently mourned the passing of Owsley Stan, who many years ago abandoned his biochemistry studies at Berkeley to help launch the Dead to stardom. So, belatedly, Austin will receive Dark wall's moving tribute to Owsley:

As always, many thanks Austin.

Hey Austin, the Les Claypool mask reminded me - do you like Buckethead? I think he's great guitar player, and the Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket he wears on his head is genius. He wears a mask too:

They put on an amazing live show. I'm actually planning on going to see them here in Dallas on the 25th of May, since my BDay is June 1st. The masks were mostly for certain songs & general sillyness, to great effect I must say. It's hard to not have fun when Les is stomping around the stage, playing those amazing bass riffs that only he can manage, all the while wearing a pig mask.

The image on the card is perfect, and I have no idea why. I've never seen Primus. I've seen videos. There are a lot of stills when you Google. Seems like they did performances with masks a lot? Or they did at one point? That why I posted that.

Yet another reason that image seemed to fit the card.

I rarely, if ever, have a grand plan regarding anything. Heehee.

Austin, I'm relieved you didn't have a grand plan with the print. It looks like it might have originally come from a very old book. I'm pretty amazed how well this works for Primus. I don't know all the song titles, but you know I'm huge on Claypool - and this is it somehow. I can see it

You're very welcome. I don't know where that print on the front came from, or what Antiquarian means, I just found it in my shoebox full of clippings & it seemed to fit.

So this is the Primus piece. It works for me. Thanks Austin

I was listening to Primus when I made this one, & the song Mr. Krinkle started as I was laminating it; hence the kind of odd address field. Glad to see it arrived intact. :)
