Received: Mail-Art Crisis? JF CHAPELLE Pegs the Fluxus Buck (Bordeaux Cedex, France)

Mail-art by IUOMA member JF CHAPELLE (Bordeaux Cedex, France)

December 5, 2010 - Governments all over the globe have been printing currency in response to the economic crisis. Why not Fluxus too? JF CHAPELLE has put together a wonderful mail-art package addressing the crisis and containing Fluxus Bucks he made. Considering that JF is one person and not a government, he is doing an excellent job circulating this material. His Fluxus Bucks are providing much-needed relief to artists across the world; they seem to be turning up everywhere. Here's a front and back view of one of two bucks I received from JF:

Things I receive from JF (and examples of his work I have seen elsewhere) are always thought-provoking and often bring a smile. His style is very distinctive. I'm pondering what he means with the DA DA reference. Here's the back of his crisis card:

JF CHAPELLE is not the only artist making Fluxus Bucks. An international project devoted to this idea has existed for years. The IUOMA has a Fluxus Buck group, and this is a quote from their introductory material:

"'Fluxus Buck' is an artistic project from Julie Jefferies aka. ex posto facto (U.S.A.) which she started in 1994. A 'Fluxus Buck' is an artists' banknote which she distributed into the Mail-Art network. Others created Fluxus Bucks as well." Here is the envelope front:

And get back to where you once belonged:

I follow JF CHAPELLE's blog always wanting to see what he will do next:

Does anyone have other Fluxus Bucks they could post? I would seriously like to see others.

"Space...the final frontier...to boldly go where no man has gone before..." The immortal words of Captain Kirk seem apt at this moment. Thank you for supporting me in this venture, Marie. I shall go: "Ground Control to Major Tom, Ground Control to Major Tom..."

That's a very bold project, Sloan, and a very risky one. Please be careful when handling time travel, changing events might have an impact that is hard to imagine at time zero. But that's also the fun of it, so I'm in if you need my help. Let me know if there are further developments, this shall be interesting...

I will now go to bed, and I hope that when I wake up tomorrow it will be Friday February 4th of 2011. Cross fingers...

Marie, we have made an incredible discovery with huge implications. The FluX allows you to travel backwards and forwards in time. Your fluxus buck/haptic GA post was an achievement in its own right, But perhaps you did not know or will not know those particulars of the latex controversy. Those events I reported did or will happen. It was yet another chapter in a saga that will not end. Now, however, I am going to investigate the possibility of changing events. This is fraught with danger. I will attempt to keep you posted.

Oh I love receiving messages from the future! And, OMG, all of this ACTUALLY happened! Or am I going to wake up and it will all be just a dream/nightmare?

What a great comment Sloan!

Wow Marie, we're unstuck in time. You posted a comment about a month after this blog was posted that I never read. I'll send you a message from the future: You will post a blog with the Fluxus bucks the Grigster sent you. It will also include the haptic poetry he sent you made out of condoms. These pieces and others will spark a controversy across the mail-art blogs. Ross Priddle, as a joke, will threaten to inform the police. The Grigster will believe he is being hunted by the authorities. He will post a bizarre statement about fascism on his blog and issue another statement through Erni Baer to IUOMA members, revealing things about himself we never knew nor did we want to know. All this is really going to happen. I was there and so were you.

I got fluxus bucks from GA, maybe I should do a separate post about them. I don't know how old they are. They seemed to be passed along and modified. It is written on the notes: "modify etc...  but once you're done with it please mail to ex posto facto". Is her address still valid, I wonder.
