Prayer Mat for the Essentials from Thom Courcelle

I was so lucky to receive this great card from Thom. I love his mini hand made envelopes and the words that spilled out were inspired--love how he threw in "pants" for some amusement (can't see from overexposed picture). The woven 'mat' is intricate and textural. Thank you so much for this Thom!!

That book was mentioned all the time in college but was never on the list to read in any of my many lit. classes.  Finally read it on my own to see what all the fuss was about.  If it's not being read in classes much these days either, you're probably right that it's becoming "long forgotten."

OMG Nancy, The Red and the Black - Julien Sorel - a fav of mine that I thought had been long forgotten. Red & black - yes, wonderful color choices that open numerous possibilities.

Not Stendhal.

Well it looked like OOB around a couple of corners to me, Thom, but then I thought my computer must be seeing things. You are too clever. There are so many words that jump out as possible. Very interesting! And I like the red and the black.

I'm thrilled the weave has gotten some attention. Back in the winter we had a huge blog discussion about this. They preserve the tradition of weaving. And when you use language, they're like these random letter combination generators, even compared them to William Brroughs cut-ups. Definitely some interesting language things in Thom's piece - also has some possible asemic elements.

Glad you all liked it!  Thanks for posting, Diane!  I almost called this one "Easily Deconstructed," but I like that it serves a useful purpose this way.  It's almost like a little Zen garden if you arrange the words on the prayer mat!...

Did you notice that there are at least a couple "OOB"s in there, Nancy?

It sure looks like it, and might be the first big one I've seen. Thanks Diane and Thom. It's an education here just about every day. This one has led to some dizziness, appealing though it certainly is.

yeah, I love the look of it-wouldn't have thought to do that--like an asemic tic tac toe

Excellent again! Did Thom do a text weave? Tina Festa and Cheryl are the only two other mail-artists I know doing text weaves. They're really great. Thanks, DK.
