I have decided that, as part of "documentation" for this little project, I would add a posting here every month or so - a sort of progress report - and a record of how the project grows or changes, choices made and decisions taken. I have already started posting scans of finished, or near finished pages in a photo album on this site and I am making plans for some sort of written documentation for the projects end, so things are sort of coming together.
At the moment, one month in to the project, I find myself thinking how to reconcile two different beasts .... "artistamps" and "a collection".
Artistamps are, by their nature many and various. there are no rules as to what one is or how it is made or distributed or what it should look like. This is what makes them an interesting "art form" I suppose. A "collection" on the other hand is about ordering, classifying and keeping to rules. Nere the twain can meet perhaps?
At the moment the dozen or so pages that are done or started are simply random; an accumulation rather than a collection. I am trying to decide whether that is the way it should be or whether I should impose some sort of order on it all; putting the artists in alphabetical order perhaps; assembling pages that illustrate the different sorts of printing techniques, different papers, different perfing techniques etc etc. That way would lead to me having to become more of a collector myself, tracking down examples of one sort or another, head hunting artists an so on, and would make it an entirely different sort of project than I had envisaged at the outset..
I wonder if anyone out there has experience of putting a similar project together or has any thoughts on the subject??
Meanwhile, stamps are accumulating and the first of my own stamps are finished . Things gather apace.
Just a little addition.
writing all that out has brought me to a decision ... I am just going to "go with the floe" and ignore any temptation to become a "Collector" That seems much less stressfull and more productive to boot!
