Condensed Biography and Curriculum Vitae

Cheryl Penn

After completing a stint at the South African Embassy in London after matriculating, becoming one of the first accelerated female trainees with Barclays Bank and completing numerous qualifications with the International Bankers Institute, Cheryl Penn  took up her true passion, art, about eighteen years ago.   She did a ceramics course at Pinetown Technikon and ran her own ceramic business exporting proudly African inspired ceramic art ware to America, England and the East for about five years before embarking on a painting career.  Penn owned and ran a gallery-studio for five years before starting to paint full time.  She is a professional artist who specializes in large corporate installations of original two-dimensional artworks, executed mainly in oils and mixed media.  Her academic works hang in many corporate companies, together with her commercial work, which is, tailor made to the clients requirements.   Penn has been commissioned to do installations for hotels, insurance companies, banks, law firms, Advocates Chambers and educational institutions.

2007 proved to be a busy year with the completion of a research paper entitled Collage, the Quintessential Postmodern Art  Technique Having Regard to the Work of Wangechi Mutu,  finishing a degree at UNISA,  appointment as Curator of the ADvTECH Collection and two solo exhibitions.   In 2009 she completed an MTECH degree at the Durban University of Technology  Aside from teaching and painting, Penn now makes artists’ books, a highly specialized current form of art practice.  She is also a member of The International Union of Mail Artists where she has co-ordinated and supervised a variety of international projects with upwards of 26 artists from all over the world contributing  to collaborative projects.   Some of these projects will be on exhibition in 2012. They form part of her theoretical  approach to art making which she loosely describes as international collaborative trans-disciplinary art practice. She uses and trades in the  medium of ideas as subject matter.

Cheryl Penn will again be lecturering  art history and paintng at the Durban University of Technology (Durban. South Africa),  and  the curating the New ADvTECH Art Collection (Johannesburg, South Africa).  She also gives independent courses in book making and bookbinding, as well as guest lecturer to numerous tertiary institutions.

Her current passion is Mail Art  as a form of transdisciplinary, collaborative art practice and she has co-ordinated a few international mail art projects in 2010 and 2011 which have resulted in limited edition  books.  Project 26, an international collaboration has already been exhibited in Italy and South America.   In 2011 she and Dr De Villo Sloan (New York)  co-ordinated 4 books on Asemic Writing. Over 45 artists from around the globe  participated in this unprecidented collaboration.   These books will be ehibited at her next solo exhibition in October 2012 (D.V.) at the ArtSpace, Durban.  Another world first was the co-hosting (with Dr Sloan) of  two books on Visual Poetry.  32 international artists are currently involved in this work.

Cheryl Penn also has a growing collection of  small format artists books which have been collected from artists internationally.  These  are currently being documented for exhibition purposes.  The collection is titled The New Alexandrian Library Boekie Collection (South Africa).  The collection has been growing for two years and includes several collations of artists books which she headed on the site International Union of Artists Books 3.0 Ning. She is on her eighth collaborative effort on this site.
