usual thing ... as soon as you die there are books and exhibitions and more books ... and if you get the books whilst you are alive you are just a fashion and quickly forgotten.  I was looking through a book on "Modern Painting" I bought in the 70s. all the people written up as the next Picasso ... all gone and forgotten and the people missed out as irrelevant sidelines such as Lucian Freud  and Balthus .... they get the books now.  There is hope for us all ....

Nevermind,  will have to put a date in my diary for 2012 then.   I see there is a book due out to coincide with the exhibition "Imp of Surrealism".

Well this is a blow.
I have just been checking the Bradford gallery opening times and noticed that the Earnshaw show is 2012!! long time to sustain enthusism.  What are they promoting it now for? Oh well ... jollies postponed.

Cartwright hall .. the main Bradford gallery in Lister Park.  Earnshaw is one of the great British Surrealists, or was - he died in 2001 i think - could be worth you making an effort to see.

I have lost track of what is where in the great Tate mess of venues. Not keen on travelling to london to see something that could well be on the wall in Liverpool or down in Cornwall.  Some years back I went to see a big Surrealist show in Tate Modern and spent a few minutes wandering around the "permenant " collection.  If I remember rightly there was a small display ... a pile on a plinth if I remember ... of stuff, including mail art which was collected round Yoko Ono and I have a vague idea that there was something from A1 in amongst it ..... or it could all have been a dream!  I have never been motivated enough to go back and check.

Let me know if you decide to venture over to Bradford and I will try and get there too ... we could make a thing of it??

We went to see the runners going through the gallery - forget who the artist was.  Had a quick look at the Pop Art room and new aquisitions.  I dont know much about Anthony Eranshaw I must confess and had to Google him. Sounds like an interesting chap. I'm sure Ive seen his Alphabet books around.  Where abouts is he showing in Bradford?

As I remember ... the mural was in the resturant bit but I cant remember now who had done it. but they swapped things round several times.  All the pre-raphs were in a basement room too ... seems all the best stuff was down there.  I dont think I have ben to millbank since Peter Blakes big show and that was 15 years ago or more!

Talking of exhibitions ... have you been to see the Anthony earnshaw exhibition in Bradford?  I have plans to see it next week maybe.

Yes, the Stanley Spencers were great - quite literally!   Wasnt there also a huge mural by someone else in the cafe?

Ah, memories, memories ....  I spent many hours in that basement cafe .. the best fruitcake and the best Stan Spencers on the stair walls before he became fashionable and moved into storage.  Memories, memories ....
