Why I am involved in Mail-Art:
I learned art at art schools in the U.S. mostly in San Francisco such as SFAI, and Academy of Art University and also at the College of Santa Fe. I do painting and photography, and I became interested in conceptual, collage, and recycle art. I found this site from redletterday who was my teacher. I am also interested in writing since I was a child.

In 2009, I participated the International Mail Art Exhibition of West Java, Indonesia. In 2011, 2nd Mail Art Exhibition at the same place. I sent my altar box.

mail art is inspired to do my own art works.

I graduated Academy of Art University, San Francisco, USA in 2010.

oh i am very jealous! you are living my dream...going back and forth between japan and SF. for a while i was thinking of moving to osaka. i am sure i will still move there one day...and i am very excited!!!

we are putting together some benefit shows for japan. maybe you will be able to come?

  • amazon59

I found your email on your website/blog. Hope that was ok to write to you that way.
  • Valentine Mark Herman

Thank you! I'm sure this information will be greatfully received; two things you can do to help are i) make a Peace Crane -- look at the Peace Crane Group for details; and ii) send a YOU postcard -- details in the Tombstone Group pages.

Stay in touch and thanks again. Regards, Val

  • Valentine Mark Herman

    Dear Galicias,

I am sorry if I misunderstood your original question: it is clear now.

Really the only thing that I can say to you is to do what you think is best -- you are one of the 'local experts' who knows what is happening on a daily basis in Japan and knows what best can be done there and for all of those in Japan. People like myself (I am in the South of France) can only follow developments on TV (especially CNN, BBC World, etc), various internet sites, comments from friends, and the developments that are reported back to us from IOUMA colleagues. We are at a great distance -- geographically, emotionally, physiacally, and so on -- and can only experience at secondd hand what is happening in Japan.

Yes of course you can send link up 'Solidarity' with MMIX Arts Fund in Sendai Myagi. Please do whatever you think is necessary, appropriate and timely. I started the Solidarity Group, but I do not 'own' it -- each of its 100 members, and IUOMA itself, will, I am sure, give you whatever help they can.  The Group empowers each of us to help in any way possible. One example of what we as Mail Artists in IUOMA are doing is the 'Peace Crane Group': are you aware of it?

Yes, do start a new mail art call if it will help things: I will be one of the first to contribute something to it, and if I can help in any way within IUOMA, then please let me know.

I hope that your personal circumstances are such that you can return to San Fran soon. What subject are you graduating in?

It's good to hear that you are selling some of your work:may it continue.

Do, please let me know if I can help in any way.

    Best wishes, Val

  • Marcela Peral

Thanks you for replying Tomoe. Nice to know you're well... I've been at my son's school telling them about the Peace cranes project, and the have already made more than 1000. I'd want to ask you if it's a good idea to send them to the Hiroshima Paper museum,,, or you can tell me anywhere else.

I'll be sending something soon. Greetings from the south.

  • Marcela Peral

Gracias Tomoe!!! It's a good site, and we really wanna help the tsunami victims. I'll tell the teacher to send the cranes there.

Best wishes... and go on with your spanish lessons!!!

Arrived yesterday 22 July. Thank you for your interesting packet.  Reflection photographs are among my very favorite.  Your collage paper looks handmade and cloth-like.   TYou were daring to run that paper through your printer and it came out beautifully.  Thank you. See you in the mail.

  • Zois

Your paquet took only 4-5 days to arrive. Thanks.  For me, all replies are appreciated whenever they arrive.

  • better now than never???

i'm not sure which one is the one with the kimono,

you'll have to point me to it.

i make a collage every day or two, and don't really keep track of old ones! ;-D

  • oh!

that's my oscar wao piece! ;-D

yes, i think all three are geishas; at least according to google images - the middle one being a "zombie geisha!"

i'll make a note and send you a copy of that in the mail today!!!

i'm an off and on student, also a dad.

i wasn't working quite so furiously when i was taking class, but right now i have no classes so i am on a full time art binge. i was making a collage every day pretty consistently, but lately they are getting more involved, so often they take two days to complete -- but, they are triptychs, so in a way it's kind of like making three every two days.

as for why i friended you, i just saw you pop up on the iuoma main page and went to your profile and hit friend! ;-D

  • about the zombies:

i used to volunteer in the library and noticed more and more zombie books coming through the system - it got me curious why zombies are getting more popular. as carla cryptic put it, it's an anthropology curiosity, i want to crack a cultural phenomenon and figure out "why zombies?"

  • thanks for the video links! ;-D

am i in art school? no.

i just take classes at local community college,

mostly because it gives me something to do but also

the government gives me a grant to go to school,

so i get a few hundred dollars for taking a couple of classes.

i have only been doing mail art since february 2011,

it's really become a significant part of my life since.

when i went to school, i went for writing because i

like writing poetry a lot. but my wriing teacher

kept pushing me more toward art, so i did lots of art.

and i'm glad because i like doing the art a lot!!!

i do my collages using GIMP, you should try it!

  • awesome!!!

i look forward to your reply.

  • Katerina Nikoltsou (MomKat)

Thank you, Tomoe, I shall be waiting to see when your mail art arrives. I hope you and all your family and friends are fine in Japan!
  • Lady L

Small world, I grew up 2 hours away from Winnipeg and went there often. I enjoy networking through mail art. I hope to travel more too. I do travel often within Canada, but rarely out. I have only been to Hawaii and airports around the US along the way. I hope to travel around Europe and Asia in the future. Getting art from all over the world is a nice way to make a distant idea seem like less of a daydream. Thank you.
  • jennie gave me my first FLUXUS postcard, long before i knew what FLUXUS was all about.

i ended up making it into a FLUXUS kit for a teacher at my daughter's school, after i did a art project with the kids there:

    http://moomoosuperhero.blogspot.com/2011/05/flux-kit.html

the postcard is from jennie, and the chinese box is from Skybridge Studios, who is more active here on IUOMA than jennie is. they are both incredibly sweet people and i love the fusion of their works in this box. it is one of my favorite pieces of art i have made, and it didn't take any effort really at all. just a little glue and some love!

  • but no, i have never met anyone from IUOMA.

i rarely leave the house, let alone my town!

there is a mail artist here on iuoma from iowa city, alicia starr,

but we've yet to cross one another's paths in real life!

  • Katerina Nikoltsou (MomKat)

Thank you, Tomoe! Very beautiful mail art from Japan has arrived in Greece. Your painting of SanFran is lovely, as is also the work of your partner. Thank you so much, dear friend!

  • Lady L

I received your art today! I really enjoy it. Thank you for including extra items. The paperclip is very cute. :) I will send more your way soon!
  • Lady L

That's a great idea. I wanted to make stickers and stuff. I will send you some when I get them printed. :)
  • Valentine Mark Herman

Bonjour Tomoe! Thank you for the very nice 'Abstract Cosmos' card that arrived here safely this morning: great stuff. And I liked the dog paper clip on the back of it. Are you having any success in selling your art? I hope so. (If you want to be my Japanese agent and sell some of my art, I'm sure that we could work something out).

I'll be mailing you something back at the start of next week.

    Thanks again, and....Bon Weekend.

    Regards, JE Sweefoo

I don't mind that you are slow :) I will send something soon. And if you don't hear time to create something to send me, maybe you could send me a magazine from Japan? I would love a magazine to use in my collage and mail art!!!

So you saw the invitation for the Recycle at the Tokiwa Gallery in Tokyo - we did that in either 1971 or 1972.  So, you see, Rain Rien Nevermind has been at this business for a long time.

Where did you see the invitation?  I would like to have a look at it after all these years.
