1952 (when I sent a "Thankyou for my Birthday Present' to my Grandma, and illustrated it with a little drawing). Since then my Mail Art history has been, well, interesting
PS I forgot also to mention that a have a few dog videos shot at the Mad River on YouTube -- to find me there do a search for "lichenesque", that's me. They are older videos so may pixilate a bit. The labs are guide dogs belonging to a sight impaired friend.
Absolutely true, Kat (+ not hard for others to imagine, one would *think*). Many IUOMA members know firsthand that we regularly exchange m.a. with longtime mail artists who don't want an obvious online presence, even though they freely became and choose to remain IUOMA members. Some were mail artists in every sense of the word way before IUOMA existed, but they remain members. Hardly to be discounted!
Hi Val, re YouTube ... I don't think of it as social media, but rather as educational & fun, for example interviews of Tom Waits, or Annie Leibovitz, or other people who fascinate me, plus the TED lectures, oh & people commenting about what it's like to live in Japan (I'd like to try that). If you ever do get to it, I'd thought to ask if you like "Simon's Cat" a creative hand-drawn cartoon by a Brit who totally captures the nature of cats, it's very amusing!
hi Valentine ,no i have,nt seen the birdy pictures i,ll have to check them out . and if i feel my african goddess needs a mask i,ll commission you to do one for me . your masks are amazing by the way ....
Wow, so you ride a Duck! In our country we happen to call it 'Lelijke eend'' or 'Lelijk eendje' (= ugly duckling), and in Flemish 'Geitekop' (= goat's head). Anyhow, I think these cool, nostalgic cars. One day, few years ago, I have driven such a 2cv, and it was a big challenge to find out how to accelerate and how to brake :-)
By the way, the fact that my latest sent mail art contains orange is totally accidental! (and it seems to be no duck either..).
These are beautifully painted ceramic eggs from the Covered Bazaar in Istanbul, made in the town of Iznik, Turkey. MomKat once gave that egg to Afroditi as an Easter , Pasha, gift . and Edmund now has one here too.
I wish I could have gotten to the camera in time! Picture this... a 94 year old woman, all bundled up in snow jacket and boots, carefully picking her way through the snow down the long driveway to the mailbox. Just to mail your art. :-) (My mother LOVES this... going to the mailbox is the highlight of her day!)
I send some mailart out this morning! My nickname is Mathom-House because I like to keep useless things that I like: Mathom is the hobbit word for those things. Then "house" because I'm fat like an house I like to think that the mailart I receive isn't addressed to me personally, but it's addressed "to my house"... It isn't a linear&logical argument but it's a sort of explanation.
My first (true) name is Davide - and you are the first here to know that!
Hi, for IUOMA members, we are the owners of an art gallery in Marseille, France, and organizing a Mail Art exhibit ''not for sale'' from June 3 to 30, 2014. The theme is: "Mermaids in the port, queens of the sea..." We invite you to participate and send an artist's letter. Free technique. On a postcard or any other object of your choice. Illustration, address and stamp on the same page. Deadline for hanging: May 10, 2014. Send a work in mail format as original as possible. Send to: JC SARPI - LE LAB 3 rue Bussy l'indien 13006 Marseille France .We will answer each mail by sending Mail Art. Looking forward to presenting your works. Thank you for giving the information to all the persons who may participate to the project. Look at http://lelab13006.blogspot.fr
Thanks Valentine, I got your MA today... 5OO ? It seems to be a lot of people with the same tastes ! but we must tell that diversity is not either in their clothes ... 497 wear a tie!!
+ Love "L'Etang d'Art", better than "L'Etang d'âge", although sometimes a passage on L'étandage could be a solution (to me bien sur :-)
Thank for the heads up. It seemed like a fun project (I wanted to sculpt some fake bus tokens). I guess I should have checked it out a little closer before I joined.
purpleferret: years ago I sold antiquities and art on ebay and I needed an ID: purple is my favourite colour and I rescued ferrets :) Glad you got it....
Hey Val Mark: ferrets are largely kept in Canada as pets, although some use them to keep livestock barns free from rats and mice. As pets, they are often abandoned or given up. Pets here are disposable accessories. Ferrets are considered exotic and not a lot of people understand their care, so we formed a rescue group to educate, foster and rehome ferrets, in their forever homes.
Do Not Open! is fabulous! Thanks!! I love playing with concepts/words - and you did it brilliantly! I sent a vaguely similar contribution to Zalop's illusory art exhibition some time ago ( not the same, but playing with the same sort of idea) . I will recreate it (more or less) for you, Erni and Vizma - since I think you 3 are the biggest fans of conceptual mail art!
HeHeHe...I found a sealed stamped addressed piece of mail to you from long ago. Of course I had to open it - but I will re seal and send. You will perceive from that letter that I must have been imbibing liquor at the time ( and obviously had a gulp or two near the end of it!). Anyway its quite funny. It was written before the blow up that shall not be mentioned - and I have an idea that I didn't send it because I was getting annoyed about the bickering! Sleeping dogs...
The not dissappearing, not transparent, not light sensitive, not invisible mail is not yet in existence - but it will come!
Hi Val...I saw the photos of your exhibit....Awesome and Congratulations!
Also received a wonderful mail art package from you...sticks and stones...thank you.. Will post and be seeing you in the mail soon...
No nothing like that , I'm british , I just live here . And it won't change it's just our p.ms trying to destract use from the bad things he's done/doing , and it's election year. There's already been a vote and 78% said no change.
Hi Valentine! what a surprise in my mail box yesterday! you know...the beginning of this fairy tale is yours, infact the first version was told by French peasants in the 10th century. so thank you very much for your 'new' red riding hood, a tradition that go over years...
Some guy in Anaheim says thank you for the latest mail art. My mailbox is always a happier, sunnier place when Val drops something into it. Quechua; sounds fluxus, but it turns out to be an entire language. Yarp.
