The one I got had Opal something--I thought it was Misty but may have been Moiety-- and a SF P.O.Box written on two pages.

  • Mim Golub Scalin

Opal moiety. I got that on one of mine. But I’m sure Gergen wrote that himself. Check postmark. Or Opal doesn’t realize it came from Gergen.
  • De Villo Sloan

Also so sorry to be so long-winded. I had really wanted to write an article about the fakes.

I have reservations about naming people in public but Dennis Gergel (I believe that is accurate) has contacted a number of us here, so we've been pulled into this. I didn't realize a number of fake DSF Cult a&ps were circulating.

With any A&P, it's up to you (the recipient) to decide what to do: Circulate or not, contribute to the art or not, document online. It's just a matter of your own ethics & conscience.

There is no money involved, so it would be of no interest to a lawyer if anyone is worried about that. If you are outside the USA, there is not much anyone can do, So please do not worry if you are "holding" a fake DSF A&P or contributed to one.

When I dug into the fake DSF A&Ps I made some inquiries among mail artists on FB. DSF (Michael Kelly) called the fake right away. A woman artist from New Mexico, USA (not an IUOMA-Ning member) identified the fake and said she had been receiving unwanted mail from DG for a long time. A few other women responded as well - but I'm a bit hazy because it was "just another night on the job."

Opal moiety - those have been turning up too. Funny about that as well: Everything isn't about me. BUT! I put out a call for info about a veteran mail artist named Opal L. Nations who is a legend but MIA. Joey Patrickt reported Opal is still alive and living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Great! I love Opal. Then the Opal moiety tidbits start arriving. Strange,

To be honest, I suggested to DSF (via messenger) that I post the fakes online and share the narrative. Then at least we could see what's being discussed. For whatever reason, DSF didn't want the fakes published. The woman artist was adamant they not appear. In truth, you or I can post the A&Ps. I just didn't out of deference to the women & DSF. I sort of wish this had all come out a few months ago,

Thank you for putting up with my rants! DVS

Good morning. Thanks DeVillo. I’m mail art friends with the NM artist snd I remember well when things were happening. Glad Opal is still alive and well.
  • Pam McVay

Can someone take my picture out of this group and remove me from this list please?  I really don't want to be part of Add and Pass.  Thank you!

  • De Villo Sloan

    Thanks, Mim. If I wasn't clear, I believe the Opal moiety signatures are fake as well. Opal Nations stopped mailing a LONG time ago (too bad really). The fakes appeared during the modest uptick in Opal Nations interest on FB. This is conjecture, I must add;

Pam McVay - I think you have to delete yourself to leave an IUOMA-Ning group you joined. Another Deletist!

Hey everyone. I posted a blog about this mysterious add and pass that I received, but after reading through this group I suspect that I also received some of the “Gergen” mail. All the sheets have the marker sorts/lines border. I thought it was a bit odd that they were xeroxed, with. I thing else added to them besides some stickers, and the marker. I’m guessing he is targeting new folks? I was super stoked to have received some mail, and the slightly less stoked to find out that it was semi-fake lol. If anyone wants to send me some
actual add and pass mail, I’m down to add to it, and send on. My address is on my profile. Thanks. -Jim Rice ( Devolved Post).

  • Jenn Miltenberger

    Hi Jim, that’s a Gergel.

I’ll send some various Add and Passes your way, I seem to take all the homeless ones in. I’m always open for adding and passing. Welcome!

  • Mim Golub Scalin

Hi Jim. I’ll send some your way, too.
  • xDEVOLVEDPOSTx

Mim Golub Scalin + Jenn Miltenberger.  Thanks so much for the offer.  Please send anything!  I appreciate the kindness. -Jim Rice.

  • dustincecil

i think i got some 'fakes' recently too.  i added to them, and have started to send some out..

i'm always happy to add and pass.. :)

  • De Villo Sloan

Hi, another baseline thing. There is no right or wrong way to do an Add & Pass of course. But an average add & pass will have contributions from the artist & stamps or signatures identifying the artist & their location. It helps if there is a final destination. (These were invaluable before the internet). Here is a nice format circulated by a woman in the Netherlands. FYI.

  • Mim Golub Scalin

    Good example.
  • Mel Anie

This is all very new to me. I have never received an official add and pass (or maybe I did once and didn't know what it was) and I have never received mail that looks anything like this example. So, oh dear because I have sent something to Mim: she was the first or second person to engage with me in a way I understood and so she (unfortunately?) gets the first messy energies of my flurry (all completely playful and tailored to her, though). I think I called one of the pieces an 'add, subtract, multiply, divide or simply pass'. I did not provide further guidelines. You may recycle it, Mim.

  • Mim Golub Scalin

Appreciate the mail, Mel Anie. I'm feeling so awful because things meaning mail incoming is piling up on my studio table. I will get to all of it, and I will add pass divide etc all things that call for it. Meanwhile, I've been grabbing an old postcard or artist card and adding a circle or text to it. It's fast and relieves my stress. See you all in the mail eventually. Peace and love

  • De Villo Sloan

I just came across this scan of a Ray Johnson Add & Pass and thought you might like to see an actual A&P from the New York Correspondance School. Richard C or CrackerJack could tell us more, but my understanding is that Ray Johnson's Add & Passes were often very directed & based on themes.

  • Mim Golub Scalin

How terrific to see that. I haven’t ooked at my Ray Johnson bio book in awhile. I’ll check to see if there are any examples in it.
  • De Villo Sloan

Thx Mim, a look at the small print in that a&p is fascinating. I spy Bill Wilson. I spy Irene Dogmatic. She's still in Berkeley and friends w/ many of us on FB. Isn't that wild?

  • Mim Golub Scalin

I love looking closely. All the names-the artist Rosenquist, art editors, museum directors, more. Thanks for posting this. We sometimes lose sight of our beginning.”
  • Jenn Miltenberger

I seem to have taken in many homeless add and passes in the last year and this one came in a recent random stack. Over ten years old, added by John and Jim. Debating if should add and send out in circulation again or pass it back. ;)

  • Susan Weisberg

It looks finished to me. But I tend to like things that are not cluttered.

  • Mel Anie

I agree with Susan, for the same reasons. Although, the list of words..... Can you add to the back or you can you add another page?

  • De Villo Sloan

Woh Jen Miltenberger, an add & pass with contributions by Jim Leftwich & John Bennett)! I don't play favorites! After you've been in m-a for awhile you get friends!

Did you add to it, Jen? I'd definitely add and pass along. Then Jim and John can say they collabed with you ;)

I am a guilty add and pass grabber. If I like it, I keep it! But that's greedy and I do have an archive.

  • dustincecil

i got an envelope from opal moiety today with a S.F. return address and CA postmark.  seems 'real'  but this thread has made me question everything. lol

it had a bunch of pages torn out of the book of mormon.

nothing warms my heart more than such casual heresy  disbursed via post.  :)  happy early new year everyone!!

  • Mah Nu

    ♡F♡A♡Q♡

I've got a new A&P series coming out! Frequently Asked Questions. To be engaged with however the receiver would like to. As these and others are returned to me, they will be documented and given a new life (some sort of zine, exhibition, ongoing project, etc). Let me know if you'd like to receive one of these fresh sheets full of possibilities! I'll include some art for keeps as well :)

  • Mel Anie

Yes, Mah Nu, I will happily engage with your frequently asked questions; thank you.

  • Amy Irwen

I have some add n passes ready to head on.. any takers? Let me know...I'd like to split them with 2 if possible...

  • Jenn Miltenberger

Amy, feel free to send my way if they’re not ones I already sent to you :p

  • dustincecil

    I"m always open to A&P..:)

  • Amy Irwen

Great Jenn and dustincecil...I will divide them between you both...thanks!

  • Mel Anie

Months ago I received some mail art. I didn't know what it was. I replied to it in my way - I cut things out, drew things on, added some stamps, folded it into a zine and sent a lucky penny back because I was asked to mail them £30 (which confused me enormously!). I have figured out that it was an add & pass, so I have posted it here. I have a photocopy of their original but not of mine. It was from someone called Krzysztof Szymczak - but I sent my version back to him. Does anyone want to play with one of these if I fix it up a bit?

  • Susan Weisberg

I would immediately trash anyting that asked me to mail 30 pounds. And there's no IUOMA member named Krzysztof Szymczak.

  • Susan Weisberg

I'm sorry I didn't know aboutKrzysztof Szymczak. I looked him up in the UoMA list of mail-artist profiles and he wasn't there, so I apologize for that misunderstanding.

The only things I would throw away are things that seem suspect, such as a request to send money. I don't think I need to post a warning about that.

  • Mel Anie

Oh, Susan, it took me months to reply because I felt uncomfortable about the money side of it too. There was an order form for some catalogue, which it appeared I could buy. I couldn't decide if it was a hoax or not, so I sent the drawing of a lucky penny from Fortnum & Mason. Vernon, I have the original add & pass photocopy that was sent to me. I could turn it into a similar little zine and would be happy to send it on to you, if you like.

  • Bonniediva

Mah Nu! Hey, Darlin'! Yes, please, to some of your Add/Passes!

  • Mel Anie

I received a fun little Add 'n' Pass book from Fleur Helsingor. It was started by Ed Giecek. It had a Halloweeny theme & now it has a bit of a 'Hello-ween' feel too. These photos are of a couple of pages before I work on it. Please let me know if you would like to receive it next.

  • Fleur Helsingor

You're welcome, Mel Anie ... enjoy!

  • Mel Anie

I have added to most of the pages in this little zine and now I'm ready to pass this one on. Who would like it?

  • Jenn Miltenberger

Ed Giecek, Joel Cohen (the Sticker Dude), Katerina Nikoltsou, Opal Moiety, C. Mehrl Bennett, and myself.

  • Amy Irwen

Just wanted to note that Katerina Nikoltsou does not want any add n pass sheets sent her way...I'm not sure if this has been noted before or not. I just received an envie full of pass ons in December that Kat sent....thanks all

  • Jenn Miltenberger

    Thanks for reminding others, Amy.

I believe she has it noted in her profile too.

The one below is a little older.

If anyone wants add and passes, let me know ;)

  • Erin Morse

Hello, I have five add and pass to send. Let me know if anyone is interested! :)

  • dustincecil

i'm always open to add and pass.

  • Peggy huff

Let's see.......where is a person's address to send something out?

    thx

  • Jenn Miltenberger

Would anyone like some Add+Passes sent their way?

I'm always open to taking them in :)

  • Kimberly Carpenter

    Hello

I carved this bench stamp the other day. The empty bench makes me think about the world right now. Quiet places without people and empty benches waiting for people to come back and enjoy the view. I'd like to send out cards with just the bench on them for people so fill out the 'view' and send on/return. Is this the right group for that sort of thing?

  • Jenn Miltenberger

Totally, Kimberly. Would love to add. :)

  • Kimberly Carpenter

Great I'll send one your way Jenn

  • Heleen de Vaan

That’s a beautiful bench stamp, Kimberly!

And yes, also I’d love to add to your bench :-)
