In 2013 the IUOMA was 25 years old. There was no central exhibition, but all members were encourages to make their own (large, medium, small) exhibition, and to ask members to send them IUOMA stuff for that exhibition. This groups was a central point for starting those projects. Each project will be owned by a member. Have a look if you like the challenge.
Once a project was decided it will have its own discussion and projectnumber. The owner of the project can start his/her own page in this group (add a page) to document the steps of the project.
Now the IUOMA is heading to 30 years in 2018........

Comment
good idea!
I started numbering the discussions on Projects. So that brings some hold for people to see what projects have been started and how they develope. For ducumenting the project, the option "Add a Page" gives lots of oportunities and I could connect them to the numbered projects. There is a structure for you if needed.
Buiding structures is always good.
Having an unstructured set of information about a single project leads to confusion and people not knowing what's going on. Artists should be involved in art, not trying to work out what on earth is going on in a large-scale project. Artists should be involved in exploring art first and the internet later (a lot later, if ever). Artists should be...
.....oh, never mind, I can see I'm on a loser here.
However this network is structured some people will always come up with an alternative structure that is counterproductive to those who seek a simple one. That's the nature of IUOMA. That's what makes it so enjoyable. There is a structure already, of course. What I'm arguing for is a very small extension of it -- a single at-a-glance list of what 25th exhibitions are going to take place.
That's all.
TRying to structure the network only makes people want to experiment more so it is contraproductive. Or one might say: productive, since the goal of an artistic network is to explore new ways.
thank you Val!
Bonjour xx!
What I was suggesting was setting up a single at-a-glance site to see what's going on -- and not having to look at a series of pages like Theresa's: a one-stop-shop if you like.
The comments will, of course, keep on flowing. The 'shop' will record when there is something 'for sale' -- ie an exhibition.
There are 2609 members of IUOMA, but many of them are not active. Of course, this depends how you define 'active' -- I would define it as posting some sort of message here at least once a month. If nothing's been posted for the last 6 months, then I'd say a person is no longer in IUOMA.
There's a continuum of activity from 'Seems-To-Spend-Every-Minute -Of-The-Day-On-IUOMA' at one extreme, to 'Joined-And-Was-Never-Heard-Of-Again' and 'Joined-But-Has-Dropped-Out-But-Not-Officially-Left' at the other.
Perhaps Ruud know how many members are really 'active'?
I had a Mail Art call for an Envelope Exhibition this summer. I got over 550 envelopes, of which about half were local (from schools, friends, tourists, assocaiations, etc), and half international. I estimate that about 125 international Mail Artists contributed -- and some with up to half a dozen envelopes.
Finally, you ask 'Are 25 exhibitions doable?' I don't see why not. At least we can try for that number.
Hi Val, my understanding is that once a project is really on its way, a discussion is opened - like Theresa William's above. Ideas are being tossed around in the comments. Are 25 exhibitions doable? I have no idea how many people are actually active in the network. Do you have any experience with numbers - that is when a call is sent out, how many pieces are usually sent in?
I came up with a 25th Birthday/Anniversary idea almost exactly a year ago. It's below.
Suggestion #2 is close to Ruud's current idea.
Is Suggestion #1 worth taking up in any shape or form? it could get a lot of IUOMA people involved in one very special mailing
*********************
"Here are today's [27, Nov, 2011] absolutely brilliant suggestions -- choose one!
Suggestion #1: 25 x 25
1. IUOMA members are asked to join a special Group mailing to celebrate the 25th anniversary; (Assuming 10% sign up, we should have about 250 participants).
2. Everyone who joins up receives 25 special IUOMA anniversary stickers (from Ruud?).
3. On Anniversary Day (whenever that is) every person mails out 25 pieces of Mail Art to 24 people of their choice on the list, plus one to Ruud.(This may need refining to make sure that everyone receives something. Also the Breda post office might need to be alerted to what's coming it's way.) Each piece contains the anniversary sticker, plus whatever else they want to put on it to celebrtae the anniversary.
Suggestion #2: 25 x 25 x25
1. as above
2. as above
3. we try and get 25 different Mail Art exhibitions organised to coincide with the anniversary (one, hopefully, in Breda or somewhere where Ruud can get a copy of what's being mailed out). The exhibitions should have a common, but not necessarily identical, theme.
4. everybody who's signed up mails a piece of Mail Art (with sticker) to each of the 25 exhibitions -- who are thus guaranteed of receiving about 250 contributions, enough to form the basis of an exhibition.
5. the organisers of each exhibition can run it in the normal way, asking for other contributions, selecting a theme, etc.
6. if there's going to be more than 25 exhibitions organised, then we call this:
25 x 25 x25+ (the +/plus is important).
'That's great, Val!'
'Thank you", he says modestly."
Liberté, Egalité et Art Postal!
Val
This is getting confusing (as always!) and it's not easy to see the status of the forthcoming exhibtions.
There should be one page, entry or something for all of the exhibitions that are definitly planned, with basic information such as title, theme, approach, date, place, organiser, mail address, deadline, etc
And a second page for those that are just being talked about, planned, considered etc.
Then it will l be east to find out exactly what's going on.
And if this isn't addressed soon, then things will become incredibly muddled as we get closer to the 25th celebrations.
Want to support the IUOMA with a financial gift via PayPal?
The money will be used to keep the IUOMA-platform alive. Current donations keep platform online till 1-october-2025. If you want to donate to get IUOMA-publications into archives and museums please mention this with your donation. It will then be used to send some hardcopy books into museums and archives. You can order books yourself too at the IUOMA-Bookshop. That will sponsor the IUOMA as well.
IMPORTANT: please use the friends/family option with donation on Paypal. That makes transaction fee the lowest.
This IUOMA platform on NING has no advertisings, so the funding is completely depending on donationsby members. Access remains free for everybody off course
