Irene - in the Chinese zodiac, there are twelve animals, mixed with 5 elements.  So, every twelfth year the year you were born in comes around again but every 5th set of twelve years the same element comes around again in conjunction with that animal.  Metal is one of the five elements and, because gold is considered one of the luckiest and most prosperous metals, this year is called the Year of the Golden Rabbit though it could have been any metal actually. ;)

 

The 12 Chinese zodiac animals are: pig, rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, and dog.  No cat... but, there are many different forms of astrology and the cat may be in one of the others...?  The last 7 rabbit years were 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951, 1939, and 1927.
